Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 5!

my only expericen with carvin strings is the ones that came with the bass and since I just got it about a month ago; the strings are still new to me, and so far I like them.

Is there a reason why they are not so popular.

do people find em short lasting, or not as nice sounding as others?
just asking cause I have not changed strings so far on my SB

I go from DR to Pedulla to D'addario between my basses and not sure what I like more.

I didn't dislike mine at all. I just like some other stuff a little better... plus, I'm just kind of experimenting too. Not sure I've really settled yet.

I like the Carvin strings. So far, they've lasted quite a long time (I don't like zingy new strings).

I did a search on this and some people says that Carvin are the same as the regular Labella; and some others made a point that not because they are made by labella, it means that they are as good as labella.

So far they are Ok it is not like they changed my life or anything but I’m planning to get a set of carvin SS and a set of Labella SS and see if I notice any difference.

Not sure if anyone’s ever done this before.

I thought the Carvin strings sounded pretty good but went dead pretty quickly. Im currently hooked on Dr Hi beams on my SB5.

I've been playing DR Hi Beams on my basses for... I can't even remember. Since around when they came out I guess. More recently I've switched to FatBeams. I'm not even sure there is a quantifiable difference between the two, but it just happens to be my favorite ice cream of the month :)

On a side note, I shipped the quilty ash SB5000 back today. Nice bass, just not enough to take over my #1 spot. Neck profile was a little chunkier, the bass wasn't quite as pretty in person. Just not special enough to take out my blue boy.

I feel FatBeams have significantly more low end than HighBeams, but I could be wrong since I tend to use a set of strings for a year or so before changing them, so I'm never comparing new to new. FatBeams and CircleK's (and maybe DDT's) are my preferred ice creams so far.

I've never tried Rotosounds though. I'm interested in what I hear about them being much more aggressive and rock-sounding than these other strings. Will I notice a big difference compared to Circle K and DR?

That's kind of how it plays out in my head as well. Like the FatBeams have more girth in sound to them, but same feel as Hi Beams. Could be marketing induced delusions on my part, but it worked enough to make me buy them over the Hi Beams lately :)

Strings: I've got D'Addario half-rounds on my fretless SB5000. They're OK, decent sustain and mwah. I need to tweak the set-up a bit. I'll probably end up going back to roundwounds on this bass. I liked the Carvin nickel strings, but my favorite nickels at the moment are Fender 8250s.

Scat singing along with your own fretless solo takes some stones! Both basses sounded great. The fretless looked like it maybe has the "hard as nails" epoxy coating.

Have you tried GHS Pressurewounds by chance?

I like them WAY better than half rounds. Half rounds are the worst of both worlds to me. Pressure wounds have characteristics of rounds that I like, but are a bit smoother.

I hope you dig them, man! :)

I put them on a passive bass that I had. I was wanting something different than rounds and was trying to find something brighter than flats. Those were suggested to me and I really do dig them.

In this video the guy plays a fretless with them on.

I just ordered an SB5000 in flamed maple deep orangeburst. I got it with a maple board, abalone diamond inlays, matching flamed maple headstock, gold hardware, and black pickguard. I'll be sure to post pictures in 7 weeks when I actually get it!
