Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 7!

Like Vic, I have never noticed any degradation in tone, mine sounds great with the VBT set up.

And, it can't be a new thread without pictures, so...

No need to feel sorry, it was a fun journey. Turns out I got it right on the third order, I just didn't realize it until after the 10th order or so :) If I was near a Carvin store, I would have found out which model I liked in about 30 minutes.

What I've learned for me is:

I don't like chambered SBs
I don't like the SB4000 neck profile
I don't like less than 22 frets
I only like Maple and Ebony boards
I like Alder more than Ash
I like fretless SB5's but won't play it without a gig to use it on

It turns out the stock config SB5000 is just about perfect for me.

You forgot you prefer the bright stainless steel frets. :)

The reversed Icon headstock looks amazing on the SB series. There was a black on black satin finished SB with a reverse Icon headstock that look really really good. You may have to dig a bit through Carvins photogallery to find it as it was a while ago.

Actually the pic does not do it justice.
You should come to the GTG in Conn. Nov 3rd I will be doing a little demo there for Rev sound and you could try it.

Its a one of color work that I jumped on.
-Trans Black over Ash
-Cream pickups
-Low wide frets
-Black painted headstock

Other then that its a stock SB.

Nice Jarret...;)

I have not gone what you have gone through, but tried a bunch of them already.

I know the following

-I prefer Ash over Alder or any of the other woods.
-Low wide frets is a must
-I prefer Ebony over the Maple (but like maple, its close) never rosewood.
-I like a solid finish on the back of the neck

Other then that I'm pretty happy with basically stock electronics and such.

My 4 biggest surprises about the SB series

-The B sting has the least amount of clang IMHO for a 5 string J style. To me a clangy B is something I find on a J style basses not so much on Stingrays)

-They are surprisingly very comfortable playing the majority of the night on your shoulder. (I just about never use 'one' bass only in a night but I could with the SB5K with ease).

-I have always been a fan of 'Master Vol/ Pickup Blend' well I'm really surprised how useful and smooth the Vol/Vol is on the SB.
Its sounds smoother to me then on some other basses (if that makes sense)

-I never been a fan of passive roll off but on the SB in a pop situation I tend to go about half way or even a touch more with the passive roll off just take the sting off. It really can clean up a bit of sizzle if you don't want it, (which in a lot a cases I do, just not always).

Thanks for the specs, I wasn't sure if it was Ash or not, and that's the first trans black I have seen on the SB. Looks great.

Also Connecticut is not a bad drive for me, will definitely put it on my calendar.

Awesome. I've just specced up a couple of SB5001 units and am waiting on a final price before I pull the pin on one of them - hopefully it will be ready for my Uncle to bring over to OZ at Christmas time!

I havent seen one of these in OZ, so it will be a trial by fire but from what I've read and heard I don't think I can go wrong, especially for the $$!!

Mine will be somewhat trial by fire as well, as I haven't seen or played an SB4000 live. My only prior Carvin experience was an AC40 fretless that I bought new over 10 years ago. I was happy with the build quality and playability.
