Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 8!

Was it really Carvin's blunder? What happened? I have not been able to dig up any details on the company's separation from Sekou Bunch.

By blunder , I mean losing their most successful bass model. Nobody has opened up about what happened so this leads me to believe the truth would not reflect well on one of the parties. Never was there such a buzz about a bass from them like the SB's. Some liked the look , some didn't but it sure was talked about.

I agree wholeheartedly with your sentiment...whatever did happen, Carvin may have certainly enjoyed continued success with the model if they could've managed to maintain at least the rights to the design.

There was some discussion about it. IIRC, there was a disagreement or something b/w SB and one of the Keisel spouses.

Wake up players! How you gonna let this mega-thread die after 8,993 posts? Did SB basses suddenly turn sour overnight? I don't think so...coulda fooled me anyway, I just bought myself one and it's simply delicious.

SB5000 Fretless Antique Brown/Blackburst with gold & tort including one sweet fretless neck.

Custom built for someone who didn't hang on to it for long (original order was 10/26/12). It was acquired by Gordys Music in MI who sold on eBay last year about this time. Then was traded or sold to GC where it was purchased online recently and subsequently returned to my local store where I found it, played it and instantly decided to buy it even though I was not really shopping for a new bass.

I can't for the life of me understand how anyone could have wanted this bass enough to buy it and then offload it...at least three times! I am now presumably the 4th owner of this bass in just 3 1/2 years not counting the two stores that had possession of it. This bass delivers exactly what you'd expect from it and more.

Okay, The Banksta had had a little makeover...I wasn't feeling the gold hardware so I swapped it out for black. Brand new strings and a full setup later, this thing still sounds and plays amazingly. I used GHS Pressurewounds, a little bright now for my tastes, I hope they tone down a bit.

The hardware except the knobs came straight from Carvin, the knobs were ordered from Best Bass Gear. I already sold the gold tuners and I still have the bridge, knobs, control plate and neck plate if anyone is interested.

Nice stuff on this page.

Kiesel has the PB and JB basses, if anyone is looking for something more traditional inspiration. Like the SB. You can even still request the J99a pickups from the SB, if you don't want to try the newer JVA jazz style pickup. Although, that's a darn good pickup...

I am so late to the party on these awesome basses. But better late than never!!

Picked this up last week in GC. Amazed at the build quality , feel, and sounds . This is the best Jazz 5 I’ve ever encountered . Talk about boutique on a budget !! These basses are an absolute steal on the used market. Makes me smile everytime I play it.
Here she is standing next to the bass she might might have very well dethroned .:smug:
