Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call...Part 8!

Thanks Doc! Not only great looking, but sounded awesome and was around 8 lbs! Since it’s not available anymore, I thought about having a JB-5 built using the same specs…
I like the one I picked up last week so much that I have another coming in end of this week. This one is alder / birds eye maple / stock pickups and 2band eq with both active passive tone control.
The one I got last week is ash/ birds eye maple/ emg pickups/ 3 band eq with mid sweep / passive push pull active .
Im looking forward to comparing them and seeing if they are to similar or if I end up keeping both .
My Fender Elite Jazz V is probably getting sold.

There is no point in keeping the Fender with two SB5000’s.
To be honest there is no need to keep the Fender Elite with my Geddy and just one SB5000.
I have come to realize that I do not need or use mids for my jazz basses… I would rather have the passive tone control. I absolutely loved that on my SB5001. Ever since that bass, that has been my setup on every jazz bass I’ve had since. I believe you will love it!
That has been my experience as well. I’m pretty sure you are correct.
You were absolutely correct!! I much prefer the stock Carvin pickups and the 2 band eq with tone control.
This alder weighs a lot less.
I might keep them both .
Those are both sweet basses! I tend to like alder as a body wood best, with either choice of rosewood or maple fingerboard. I love the roundness with more mids that alder has compared to ash… at least in my opinion/experience. And yes, I agree that alder usually is lighter than ash. All of my jazz basses have had an alder body except one Sadowsky that I had and it was swamp ash. A little bass and treble boost with the tone rolled off just a little bit (to about 75%) is tone heaven for me!
Decided to return the ash model. The alder /2band / stock pickups is just about perfect. Such a nice bass!!

Not much action in the old thread here. Are y'all still playing your SBs? I was going to post another picture of mine but then I saw that I posted one 3 years ago in 2019 and it's only like one page back! Lol don't want to spam the board but I really love this bass. Such a solid instrument. Would love to see current pictures of yours. *gestures to all of you*
You might try ordering a control plate for Kiesel's current J model that replaced the SB. I suspect they told you they don't have any simply because you mentioned it for the SB, which has been discontinued for a few years and there was also drama around why they replaced it with the new design. I've got an SB5k and from comparison to photos, it looks like the control plate would probably be a straight drop-in replacement. I'd be pretty surprised if it wouldn't fit, given Kiesel's "one size fits all" approach with pickups and electronics.
Another thought: the control plate for my SB5k appears to be the same dimensions as the Fender Jazz Bass S1 control plate that I still have on the shelf after replacing it with an Audere. So you could probably try a pre-wired, drop-in control plate from the likes of Audere, John East, Sadowsky, Trickfish or Lusithand and they all have chrome plates. I enjoyed the Audere a lot, and it even comes with chrome knobs.

Thanks 5sg. I will ask Kiesel again about the control plate. I would assume that they didn't make their own control plates. The tech I talked to gave me links to Hipshot tuning keys and Gotoh bridge to replace those, so I wonder if one of those companies made the control plate. Thanks
A bridge is probably up for a lot more "personal taste" because it's surface mount... you're not trying to fit an existing space (i.e. a jazz bass control cavity). If I were going to replace a bridge on one of my basses today, the easy answer is that it's hard to go wrong with a tried and true Hipshot,* but Babicz bridges are another option I'd probably think about, I've been curious about them for a while.
*An actual Hipshot bridge. None of my four Kiesels/Carvins circa 2014-2019 came with actual Hipshot (or even any Hipshot/other licensed) hardware, but I think I remember seeing some mentions in the Official Carvin and Kiesel Club thread that Kiesel has possibly updated their hardware and/or electronics over the past couple years to help justify their price increases.

Never heard of Babicz, butI'll probably end up with the Hipshot. One of the guys from Kiesel sent me a link to a $20 Guyker bridge on Amazon, but I'd rather not go with that one. Wonder if that's what they actually used. Thanks for your input! Pickups
