Carvin SB5000 / SB4000 Roll Call!

My postcard date was Jan 4, and they called to say it was completed on Jan 15th.
Update: After six days of the trial period I finally had a chance to gig with the SB5000. Sounded great, though I had to manage the extra noise of the single coils pickups in the venue. That was a tradeoff I was prepared for though, and much of the time I'd hit my mute switch between tunes. That said, the noise wasn't enough for the audience to notice, and the tone of those pickups is really both punchy and wet.
The bad news is the weight and size of the body. I've had heavy basses before, but something about this one really did a number on my back and shoulder. I was hurting the next day. So, I have returned the bass to Carvin and am thinking of trying my luck with the B50. It's got more of the dimensions of my Fender, which hasn't caused this type of problem for me.
So, for anyone interested in a sunburst SB5000 with a maple board, watch the "in stock" page on Carvin's site. If you don't mind the weight, it is a killer bass!
Mine was done about in about 5 weeks IIRC. I never got a postcard, they just called and told me it was done.
KayCee...sorry the SB5000 didn't work out for you. I'm not sure how heavy mine is. It's about what I'm used to in an alder 5-string. The B50 is probably a little lighter partially because of the rear control panel, which would allow for some extra routing.
I am using it for everything right now...it just sounds and plays great!
My understanding is that the B50 and SB5000 have identical necks, so any weight saved would be in the body itself. The specs show the SB5000 to be almost an inch wider, though I imagine that's just at the widest point. The control cavity of the B50 appears to be decent size, and would help reduce weight as well.
It really bummed me out to send back the SB5000.
I think it might be the best playing and sounding 5-string I've tried.The weight issue is probably a bigger deal for me at age 50 than it would have been at age 25, and I'm also singing all night with all that weight on my shoulder. For the right person, the SB5000 I just returned will be a dream bass...I don't think it will last long in the "in-stock" section.
Now it's back to waiting. I'll make sure to take pics and do some sort of review on the B50 when it arrives a couple of months from now.
KayCee, sorry you had to return the bass... I get what you mean about the weight. My SB-5000 weighs a lot more than my LEJ5... However, you might consider weight lifting and strength training!!! LOL. Best of luck!!!
i just ordered mine today and the salesman told me it would be about six weeks. can someone tell me about the b string. is it even in volume is it more quiet or is it more powerful? also how is the feel of the b string?
LOL! Truth is, I do lift weights, and I'm not really sure why this bass bothered my back.
I thought the B string was clear and balanced. I consider this to be mainly a result of neck stiffness, so hopefully the B50's low B will be just as tight.

This has been posted before, and it is the video that really got my attention about the SB5000. It looks and sounds like a really nice five string active Jazz Bass.
That was a sweet SB5000 with the maple fingerboard and cream pickups!
Got the call yesterday that my sb5000 is done and on the truck! Looks like it should be here next Thursday. Pics and a review will follow.
I went pretty basic. Black bass w/ black pg, birdseye maple neck and headstock. Alder body. Everything else standard. I went with the standard controls as well. Black seems to be the only color that I never get tired of, and I thought it would show off the birdseye nicely.
I was considering the same thing so I can't wait to see pics! Kudos on your incredibly good taste.
Thanks man! I'm really excited for it to get here. I'm really glad that its getting here when it is, I've got a great gig on March 13th that I wanted to use it for.
I think that will look great. My SB5000 is just phenomenally cool, hope you are as happy with yours as I am with mine.

Looks like today is the day. Checked the status, and it is a day early. If it does indeed get here today, I'll get some pics up tonight!
The SB5000 came in today! Great instrument. Still getting used to it. I will post a review in the next few days, but here are some pics.
