What turned me around was when I got my first Steinberger and started gigging on upright. No hardshells available for either one and I soon got comfortable with the idea of a bag. Slinging the bass guitar over my shoulder leaving a hand free to carry something else soon became addictive.
Good quality modern bags (like Mooradian, Ritter or Reunion Blues, not the $25 cheapies) offer plenty of protection for my local gigs.
I do have hardshells for all my other basses but I don't take them to gigs any more.
