Cases for Class D amps?

I found and picked up this handy dandy little hard case for $5.99 at a local Goodwill-type store a few months before i even decided to get my Shuttle ... fits in there perfectly, along with some cords, tuner, & whatnot :thumbsup: There's no brand name on it, and i don't even think if it was made for musical equipment ... just a lucky find.

Looks like a tool case. You can get them at harbor freight with a bigazz hunk of diced foam. I've got a couple left over from when i was fooling with r/c airplanes and i used them to store/transport my transmitters and battery chargers. I repurposed one as a tool box for all my bass related tools, including a soldering station and a plain old 60w pencil iron for quickie jobs. All the service diagrams, setup info, notes, etc i store behind the locking inner top panel. It's chock full of tools, parts, multi meter, etc etc etc. Very handy and does not take up much room when i go out of town.

I bought a second hand LM II a while back and it was in a child's roller suitcase that was also used to store a bunch of cables for a power amp and little PV6 USB i got in the same trade. Looked like a full size suitcase with collapsable handle and two wheels, but it was not much wider than the LM. It was also a bright purple and had all kinds of little kid's stuff embroidered on it. I got the little mark as a backup and never needed it so it rarely left the house before i finally sold it off.

I also had a TH500 i bought new. I kept it in a Gator waterproof box that also came with diced foam. The box was just large enough for the TH, it's power cord and a three foot and six foot 12 ga speakon cable. It was also a backup so it spent most of it's life in the Gator box. I tried it several times and could never really gee and haw with it so it eventually went, along with the box, but if i buy another class D i'm getting another Gator box, or i'll figure out how to shock mount it to an EIA tray and put it in one of my 2U SKB cases.

Back when i couldn't afford to just go buy a replacement head, my only head got a couple knobs sheared off and it was a serious PITA to rig them where i could work them with a filed down dime. After that i only bought rack mount amps, but with the rise of class D amps and the reluctance by makers to provide rack options, i will use some other protection that allows me to not worry about where my amp might be in the load out mess. I prefer the ease of rack mount, but barring that the little waterproof boxes will get the job done.

Last of all, while i don't have any experience with Pellican dry boxes, i've got a Pellican ice chest and it is hands down the best example of a cold chest i've ever owned. I could load it up with enough drinks and snacks for a couple of people for a weekend of racing, drop ten pounds of ice in it on Friday morning and still have plenty of ice left in it when i got home sunday night or monday after a couple three days of 100+ Temps.

I use the manufacturers' padded carrying bags.
I'm too much of a klutz to trust myself with padded bags. I pranged the crap out of a headstock this past weekend in a gig bag. Had it on one shoulder canted a bit to avoid hitting the top of some low door frames and smacked the jamb instead. It didn't mark it up much but it's typical of how i need protection from myself as much as anything else.

Hey folks! I was wondering what y'all use as cases for your small, class D amps? Back in the day, I had knobs/pots get sheared off of a couple of my bass amps. They weren't in a case of any kind. This made me pretty paranoid about making sure that amps that left the house had protection. I got gig bags (Studio Slips, which are amazing) for the guitar amps, because the amps all have a lip or something to protect the knobs. And my Ampeg bass head I put in a Gator plastic rack case.

I recently got a Trickfish Bullhead .5k head and really vacillated about what I should get for protection for it. My first thought was a gig bag style case, but then I was a little concerned that, bouncing around in the back of my car with heavy cabs, knobs/pot shafts might still get bent, even in a thick gig bag.

So, I ended up getting a Pelican case for the head. Lots of protection, even if it negates some of the light-weight advantage of a class D head.

Anyway - do most of you just use a soft case or throw the head in your gig bag? Anyone use hard cases? (The Trickfish is a bit too big for tossing in bass's gig bag pocket.)

For my Walter Woods I use a case similar to the one in your photo. It has literally been dropped down a flight of stairs with absolutely no damage.

I use an old laptop case. It's very well padded and it has sections to carry cables, extra strings, tuner, a couple of waters, a DI, etc.. And, since I already had it and wasn't using it anymore for a laptop, it was "free".

Also, since all my heads are small class D models, I can fit all of them except my D-800 into my gig bag pockets if I want to go extremely lightweight.

Since I am the only person that touches my gear I use this:

Gator makes a variety of carry bags that fit many, small, lightweight bass heads, if the one you have doesn't already come with one. The lightweight, rackmountable bass heads sort of defeat the whole idea of a lightweight bass head.

harbor freight carrys these: several different sizes, cheap!
Don't most people just go to a thrift store and get a cool looking vintage small suitcase, woman's makeup case, etc?
yep: makeup cases, different sizes at walgreen's, walmart, CVS, etc. handy cases!

How do you like the Bullhead .5k?

I use a soft-sided tool bag such as an electrician or handyman might carry. It's pretty lightweight, made of very durable material, and has a rigid flat bottom that supports the head and a bunch of cabling and pedals that also fit inside. I had it laying around unused from some part-time work I used to do when it carried drills and various tools - now it has a much happier function!

:laugh::laugh:
If you put the metal case that protects the electronics of your amp in a case to protect it what's to prevent that case from getting all scratched up? Better put that expensive case in another case. But what about protecting that case? Better surround it in bubble wrap and packing tape. And a cardboard box. And another box.

ROFLMAO! :laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::thumbsup:

That was evil. :smug:

But spot on the sugar just the same. :cool:
