Funny thing around here (Canada)…..the penny was phased out a few years ago. Cash sales are rounded to the closest nickel since tills don’t have pennies anymore. Pay with debit, you pay to the penny. Same with credit.

I’ve never used my phone to pay for anything in a bricks and mortar retail setting. And likely won’t ever until plastic cards are phased out.

I think the US should follow. It costs over a cent to make them, and I think after a couple of hundred years, it's safe to round.

You can drop a pile of Penny's in the street and no one will take the time to pick them up.

If you’re scared of the government tracking what you spend, you better go ahead and get rid of all your electronic banking, debit cards and credit cards. Actually, ditch your bank accounts altogether.

Much like other modern technologies, we can’t go back in time.

Very well said. That bird flew LOOOOONG ago.

which is why we need cash, less likely to know where you're spending vs cards and phones

Dear Government,

I regularly spend plastic and electronic money at Starbucks, Whole Foods, Market of Choice, Fred Meyer, Jackalope Lounge, and Amazon. I have subscriptions to Netflix, Paramount+, Apple TV+, and the digital version of the local newspaper.

I think that pretty much covers the bulk of it. Let me know if you need additional details. Or just follow my phone movement.

Sincerely,

viribus

Why? I have nothing to hide. I know that my spending patterns are captured in various computer, but none of them are run by Spectre's Ernst Stavro Blofeld. This is the real world and everything from your mortgage to your coffee to your auto registration and your taxes are on a computer/computers somewhere. That's a fact of modern life. Unless you want to move into a canyon in the central Idaho mountains, build a log cabin and play mountain man for the next 50 years while living on wild game, you're going to be on plenty of computers as well.

Take a read...this story is from today's Denver Post. They found arsonists who killed five people, primarily through tracking cell phones.

https://www.denverpost.com/2021/11/12/denver-green-valley-ranch-arson-homicide-hearing/

That's where we are today, and that's just one part of it.

I ordered a spatula off Amazon today. I'm probably on a Gubmint watchlist now.

Hey all. This is a simple survey to get a pulse on how we make payments today in 2021. Not sure why this is going sideways.

Everyone in entitled to handle handle money as they choose. No right or wrong. Please share your reasoning for how you handle this. No reason to act as if you and you alone only have the correct answer for everyone. It’s the right answer for you. That’s cool. Nor any reason to trash another persons response that is not in line with your thoughts. That’s not cool. This is how we’re learn about one another.

Unfortunately, this is a personal and emotional, as well as logical, topic. Some like using cash and checks. I regularly see posts here trashing check use as old fashioned and slowly down the rest. Others have been the victim of Id theft, which is primarily because of internet access to personal information. Others have been brought up with no point of reference. It's also a generational thing.

Because when a thread addresses an important issue, it is more likely to go sideways than one that talks about Star Trek. The more important the issue, the more sideways it can go. At least from what I've seen.
