Celinder Update 5

kobass said:
Nice piece of ash, Ken! Is that a two-piece body?

It looks like a single piece of ash to me (by following the grain through the body), but I'm not sure. My natural finished one is actually three pieces, but my blue one looks like a single piece to me. Not sure what logic Chris uses when making these... I guess it's based on what wood is available at the time of construction.

Also, I think it has the new 'active/passive' Greengrove preamp (the CP-3), but again, I'm not sure.

Body:
Ash
J-update body style / control layout
Black with black/white/black pick guard

Neck:
Maple
Maple fingerboard (front and side dots, no blocks/binding)
Acrylic finish, satin back of neck, no vintage tint

Pickups / Preamp:
Celinder Jazz pickups and Celinder CP-3 preamp wired vol/blend/treble/bass

Nice! I'll look forward to you posting a review and picture. Those basses sound SO good. I've never been more happy in all my years of playing than with the sound and playability of the Update. Whenever I'm up at LDS with it, and we are playing a bunch of different basses, when the Celinder comes out, it really does shine for what it does... that '70's J Bass on steriods' thing.

KJung...I know that Chris never had a passive option before on his update model..do you know if he actually had changed the pre for that ?
Cheers,Mitch

i've always wanted one- but over $3900 is just not going to happen , so i better forget about them, really glad the Sadowsky Tokyo with the singlecoils is scratching that 70's jazz itch for me.
that's a cool Celinder, though- someone with a much bigger wallet will grab it soon, i'm sure.

I know Chris has been working on a version of the Greengrove with passive/active capabilities. My most recent Update was actually ordered with the new pre, but Chris did not like the version that he was testing (I have no idea why). So, my recent one is 'active only' (which is no problem... it's a pretty transparant pre when set flat).

However, Glenn has this base listed with the 'CP-3' preamp, and I believe the previous Greengroves were called 'CP-2'... so I'm guessing he now has the passive/active option working.

Glenn would know!

Glenn sells for less than that. The selling price is almost identical to the new Fodera NYC's and the Sadowsky NYC's with a few options. So, a lot of money, but given that it's a truly handmade instrument and comes from Europe, and given the weak dollar, it seems priced correctly. The wood, finish quality and electronics are very unique and IMO superior to similar priced basses (I love my Sadowsky also... it's kind of apples to oranges... but the Celinder feels more 'high end custom' to me). Of course, when you get to this level (Sadowsky, Fodera, Celinder, Lull)... it's all pure personal taste.

I find the fit and finish and playability the best of any custom bass I've ever owned. I sold my Fodera and have never looked back, and these are a deal compared to those!

Not according to Glenn as of earlier today. He told me it's already discounted as far as it needs to be to sell it pretty quick, and that Chris even asked why he was discounting at all.

Bottom line, these are few and far enough in between, and desirable enough, that there's still an elite market happy to bear this price, so this selling price is the selling price.

At least, that's what Glenn told me. A favored customer MIGHT be able to beat him down a tiny bit, but if what he told me is true, and I have no reason to doubt him, as he's always been very straight up with me, it's a seller's market on this bass, so he definitely doesn't have to discount any further to make the sale.

Intersting. Well, I know I paid significantly more for my second one versus the first, so if that trend continues, I guess it doesn't surprise me that they've gone up again.

Worth every penny IMO, but a chunk of change nonetheless :bassist:

Yes, this is the real reason why, and I have information that they're going up again next year. Partly inflation, but also partly because of projections on the Euro vs the Dollar.

I may be mistaken but I think there was a price increase in the last year or so...approx..which may account for the difference in price between the the 2 of yours KJung. Certainly not to rule out future price increases either.
I talked to Glenn too and thats right..it will sell for $3900 or about..it actually lists for well over $4000.

KJung thanks for the info on the pre..interesting to check it out if it ever comes with the bass. If he settles on on a version..would you swap in the new one to compare?
