Celinder Update 5

I strongly recommend Atelier Z basses to anyone who wants an aggressive, 70's jazz bass that thinks that Celinder is a bit steep in price. They have outstanding build quality and they really nail the sound of a heavy ash 70's jazz with that classic Marcus tone.
I've been seriously considering one of these as well. Do you have one Jason?

I've owned 6 Celinders.. For a hand made/high end instrument they are well worth the money.. The tone/sound, craftsmanship and materials, playability are incredible..
But on the other hand, I just picked up a Skyline Daryl Jones 5 that rocks for alot less... It's not a Celinder, but I cannot complain... It's about what your looking for and what you're willing to pay...

That's interesting, I thought dual volume controls was the only option. Has anyone used a celinder with a blend? Is it nice and gradual so you can get different tones or does most of the action happen just off centred?

Blend is available as an option, but the default is vol vol. The reason for this, as Pete Skjold explained it to me, is, when you use a blend control, you're loading the pickups against each other, and that alters the tone.

huh....never thought of it that way. Very interesting! :D

OT: Vic, wth are you doing up this late? :p
Nothing fun. :(

Working on the basement for company on the way, and catching up on a little work I didn't get done before I had to leave today, but is due tomorrow, and I'm off tomorrow for my son's graduation, so I have to basically get all this done by later this AM and just get whatever sleep I can.

 that sucks.

Good luck and godspeed man, sounds like you need it. :)

K...I had an Update for a short time....to me..the feel and tone were unlike my Fbass and Fodera..and also somewhat different than the Lulls and Laklands and Sadowkys I've tried also. If it hits you hard...I can see why the Celinder may not be replaced for what it is IMO.
I also agree with you that the "overpriced" threads and posts are really moot if the bass makes YOU feel like the best you can be or sound.....I have some high end basses that let me feel that way ..and ....its just a personal thing....like if a Fender does that for someone just as well ( I like Fenders too).
Anyways, in the end to me the "funk" is mostly in the heart and fingers separate from the "what bass is better or just as good" shootouts.

Is your Update the one from ABT site? Nice one!

+1 on the above. My blue Update and natural Update are pretty much identical to the two currently pictured on the site (although I swapped out the black pickguard with a pearloid on on my natural. I saw that blue one and immediately called Glen to order it. It had sold immediately, so I just asked him to have Chris make the identical bass. I thought that might actually be my bass, but now remember that Glenn kept the picture of the 'original' one on the site as a 'placeholder' for the brand. The only thing I changed was the neck profile, which is a little thinner and smaller than the 'stock' Celinder profile. I believe Glenn has a pretty solid stream of the natural ones on order.

No I don't have one, but a couple years ago I did a 6 month gig in Tokyo, and I lived down the street from the Atelier Z shop. I was able to use their basses often on stage while I was there, and there are really great. I would love to see a direct A-B of an Atelier Z vs. a Celinder, because they are very similar in sound and feel. Its hard for me to compare because there's a couple years in between me playing them, but I would say that they both completely nail the classic Marcus Miller tone, with the Celinder being a touch more bright. (That Greengrove preamp makes the difference, it really lets you dial in the high end!)

I was able to to a direct comparison of Atelier Z vs. both Sadowsky NYC and the old Sadowsky Tokyo Line and also a Mike Lull. All are great basses, but the Atelier Z is all about that 70's aggressive jazz bass tone!

Gawd, this is frustrating! My Update 5 was supposed to come in just after Ken's latest (in January). After four attempts at finishing the bass in cherryburst (the finish which Chris had chosen for this bass, not me), I was recently told that this finish would not work, and I would have to choose a different one (which I had actually asked to do at the get go, but was told that I did not have this option).

Well, it looks like the passive mode preamp is now an option (which I did ask for, but was told that I could not get because it wasn't ready). So, perhaps I'll be able to get that afterall.

Oh, and no, I still don't have the bass, nor do I have an estimate on when I might get it (which I wouldn't trust anyway, since I've had like 5 different estimates on delivery dates).

Yes, they are great basses, and yes, I am sure I am going to love it. And no, this is not Glenn's fault AT ALL (he has been a saint!). It's just really frustrating, is all. :rollno:
