changing direction--to synth

Well, I really like sound 1--the envelope filter sound. Not quite as clean and fat as my MXR, but pretty passable.

Love sound 2, the EF plus octave down. Sounds amazing. I have lusted for that sound since I heard Ed Friedland demoing the MXR BEF and incorporating the octaver with it at the end.

Sounds 3 and 4, the "synth" sounds, seems to get tons of UNusable sounds--but one or two that could be usable. (Just going by this demo, mind.)

Sounds 5 and 6 are that weird voice thingy, one with a synthy waveform on it. Could be fun. Not sure.

Sound 7 is the octave down plus some kind of synthy filter sweep on top of it. I think I may find this really usable.

Considering that I can get this new from GC (who just sent me a $15 off coupon in my email) for $75... pretty darned good deal. It's already occurred to me that I might get a second one. If I found at least two sounds on it that I wanted to use regularly, it might be worth that price just to not have to fiddle with the knobs.

The octaver tracks really well.

I also use it as a practice tool for even attack with three fingers. Using setting 3 or 4, I set the sensitivity so it only triggers when I dig in a little, then practise eight notes, only triggering the synth on specific notes.

1 clean
2 envelope
3 e +octave ebs mid (sorry a little clipping here and there)
4 e + o + prunes & custard discombobulator
5 e + p&C
6 o + P&C
7 P&C

take2

same runthrough as take1
slightly more presence from sansamp
a little more out of the groove regulator,
octave on low setting and cleaned up, much less normal signal than take 1
P&C same

looper >oct > P&C > Groove Regulator > Sansamp BDDI Deluxe on factory SVT (bumped presence take2)

probably could have done with dropping the level on the sansamp and upping it out of the looper, the GR didn't get a lot to work with but you get a general idea.

Just gonna put it out there that my MXR BEF is definitely a better pedal than the BSW.

+1 IMO the filter in the BSW isnt even in the same league as the BEF. The synthy sounds are ok, but they are kinda cheesy sounding and didnt work very good in a mix. I would go BMS for funk and supersynth if you want funky and modern. I have found that the Boss does not track well enough to make it consistently usable.

I'd hold the sale of the M82 until you've played with the BSW. You were pretty keen on that pedal, and the BSW's EF has nowhere near the tweakability.

I believe it. However, I found that in spite of how much I loved it, I rarely found opportunity to use it. Not in three different bands I played with. One hard rock, one lighter rock and one trip-hop. I experimented with it here and there, but never could find the right way to use it.

Now that I'm down to just the trip-hop group, with all its programmed beats, synth strings and scratch solos, I think I'll find a home for some of the stranger sounds the BSW can generate. Here's hoping. And if not, at least I'll be able to play along to some of my favorite pop and electronic stuff at home.

Scott,

I feel like we're in the same boat. I've been craving synthy goodness. I just bought an Octavius Squeezer...a one box does it all kind of thing. I thought my individual pedals sound way better than the single pedal solution. Now granted I've only played the OS for a few days and haven't delved into the submenus...but anyway.

I have a few dirt pedals i run into the Aguilar Filter Twin. The FT in my book is way wetter than most filters because it does both an up and a down sweep at the same time. I use the oxide and it's gate quality to blast the FT in to a power synth. I use the prunes and custard into the FT for a Beastie Boy synth thing. I use an octron into the FT for an 80's synth sound plus when you add chorus it's over the top. If I add some pitchfactor with rhythms...oh crap...Stevie Wonder-ish.

I'm not downplaying the all in one solution since I see the OS will be cool when I learn it, but don't underestimate the individual pedal route either. Plus you have more pedals for other sounds.

Too bad your not in San Fran to come play my pedals and see what I mean.

I'm in SF. can I hear those pedals sometime??? Sounds like some cool combinations.

You've obviously put more thought and money into this little problem than I have! So far. Yeah, too bad I'm not in SF. Haven't been there in... ten years. But it would still be cool to soundcloud some clips, no?

I'd be surprised if you don't find several cool, usable sounds in the BSW for the type of music you're doing. It's a great pedal. I love the sound on setting 4 for HUGE synthy sweeps. I think you'll dig it. FWIW, I had a MXR BEF for a couple of days and didn't like it at all...but I'm in the minority on that.....it wasn't a pedal that would have gotten used in my band anyway, but I couldn't find any filter sounds I liked at all (useable or not).

I didn't like my BEF either...don't feel bad.

I do have an iPad 2 and GarageBand. Or I could use other software. I don't own a computer, otherwise. Except my iPhone 4S.

You know what I'm thinking right this minute? Sell my MXR M82 Bass Envelope Filter and replace it with a new Digitech Bass Synth Wah. I could probably even get revenue neutral on the deal.

It's true that the MXR is better at what it does (traditional EF) and probably has better build quality, but what it does is more limited than the BSW. The BSW could substitute for the MXR in a pinch--if I wanted that envelope filter sound--but can also get me just about any bass sound on Thriller if I wanted them.

Does that make me craaaazy? Possibly.

The synths on GarageBand are OK, we used them a bit in my band, but then we found a Moog Synth app, which is BRILLIANT!

And its only $30
