Changing pickup spacing in jazz bass

I'm not saying the 75 jazz and VM jazz are the same except for the pickup spacing. My point was if your going make a vintage modified bass after a 1975 jazz why not have the same pickup spacing? I guess that's fender logic?

The only thing '70s Jazz about the VM is the block inlays. It's really just a higher-end Squier with vintage appointments for appearance's sake. Most MIJ/CIJ '75 RI's have '60s spacing as well.

A great bass, at any rate. I actually recorded a track with one last night and was seriously impressed at how it sounded (but we all know that the tone is in the player :D).

I would suggest keeping the tape measure far away from the instrument. It should greatly enhance the playing experience. :hiding:

NO need to hide, I agree. I really don't see how a half inch difference in placement of the pickup is gonna change the tone of the pickup all that much, at least not enough to go to the hassle and expense of rerouting (and possibly repainting) the body.

Thanks for the input guys. I love the fodera idea of a moveable p/u. Hell I would love a fodera but my wallet wouldn't. I think I am going to get a loaded geddy bass body and slap on a p-bass neck. A la Timmy C
Is that blasphemous? Maybe. But I was never a fan of the thin neck on the geddy.

^This is what I am going to do. Buy a loaded geddy body and throw on a p-neck. I never liked the neck on the geddy. So it is a win for me. I get an awesome 70's body, which I can tell the difference in spacing, a comfortable neck and I'm no surgery for my lovely VM jazz.

just remember that when you're compromising the cosmetics of the bass with that plastic spacer or whatever, the only reason there is a difference is because of "cosmetics"!

the '60s spaced bridge pickup didn't quite disappear under the bridge cover, so in the '70s fender moved it back a little for no other reason.
