Because he is a YouTuber, I really wanted to hate Charles Berthoud. But I can't. He's got skills and he's fun to watch.
The European tour with Charles, Bernth, and Ola should be impressive. If it weren’t in the dead of winter I might consider it an excuse to go visit friends in that part of the world.

I am by no means a big fan of the big chops players. That said, Charles is a magnificent bassist.
I am not actually a fan of Charles Berthaud’s videos, but if I remember correctly, he was a student of the late Jim Stinnett at Berklee.

He' has chops and can be entertaining to a limited group and no, I can't play like that. Simply put, this isn't bass playing as most people see it and does not fit in a traditional band setting. Click bait from Rick as nothing has been redefined and is derivative of this. Grants playing seems less contrived. I can watch quite a bit of it. It also drives my wife nuts.
I watched it yesterday and loved it. I agree with Rick that Charles' playing is flashy, but always very musical.
There was a mutual respect in the interview. Charles is obviously accomplished and confident, but not cocky. He knows a lot about Youtubing too.

Good for you... just an excellent way to endear us all to watch Jim's videos. Yes that was sarcasm. I find his playing to be extremely obnoxious. I can enjoy many flashy bass players, but not Charles.
I have both Beato channels and Charles' channel in my Youtube subscription list. Beato does great interviews. He knows the artist's work, he understands the music, he asks great questions and then shuts up and listens. Watch the Sting interview. Sting is known as a grumpy guy, and a tough interview. watch his whole demeanor change as the interview goes on.
Charles does amazing things, and breaks it down for you in bitesize chunks. Spend a few hours with the two hand thing and see what happens.

That guy is unreal....he posted a video recently in response to the comments he gets like "I am going to quit playing after listening to him" that showed his progress and while his point was that he has put in A LOT of work, he is still incredibly gifted and on another level compared to most players...
Charles’ playing is extremely impressive. I find it more impressive that a few of his compositions I found quite moving and beautiful. I like a world with solo bass. I really like Aram Bedrosian’s music too.
