The DPA is a quite remarkable design. I have one and I really like it. If you are going FOH then it's one of the finest condenser microphones on the market in it's price range. I can definitely get a great sound from my Realist Piezo as well as long as it's in the middle range volume wise.
In my experience with my bass and amp trying to play at high volumes with a Piezo doesn't work because the tone quality changes as you increase the volume. Fortunately, I don't usually have to play at those levels without the support of a larger P.A.. When I do I will usually pull out F Deck's HPF preamp since using the higher 10 megohm setting will smooth out the sound and remove the Peizo honk that comes from playing at high volumes. At those levels the DPA will also feedback running it through an amp, so it's a wash for me with the mic.

So the OP found that a cheap piezo will work, nothing new there. The expensive e-drums also use piezos and magnetic pickups for string instruments also use cheap components - magnet, wire..... The most expensive seafood in the world swims freely in the sea too for all to catch.

Dude I didn't say that You were nasty!! Just quoted some of your sentence cos that reflected what was happening! If anything your comment was the Most level headed comment out of all! I also think that all the pickups we mentioned are of course great and considering that they last for a long time they not at all expensive come to think of it! My DIY pickup does not come close to a Wilson and without a pre-amp it sounds pretty ordinary but so is my underwood. In fact I am looking at getting a high end piezzo pickup to blend with my condenser and my little beauty will gather dust at some point. My initial post was just an over enthusiastic scream of an inventor! I have re invented the wheels mate except my wheels are oval! :)

Well, uh... okay... but when I asked "What nasty dudes?" you quoted me.

It seems you're going back and forth between slamming the commercial manufacturers and us and then saying they/we are okay. Your latest post sure sounds more reasonable and level-headed. Okay, so it seems that you're saying that the commercial pickups are fine and are resonably priced, all things considered.

Onward and upward... let's not look back. I'd be interested to hear clips of your pickup compared to others using the same recording setup. While it's difficult to make really meaningful judgments and generalizations via sound clips, as I said before, it'd be a start.

Calm down and dry yourself. You sound a like a mad archimedes who jumped out of his bath and ran down the corridor because he discovered he could wash his willy.

Did you really invent anything? No.

There are a lot of people here who are in the MI manufacturing biz, many in the custom design biz, and many advanced DIYers. If you'd like to discuss the finer points of making a pickup, many are willing to have a conversation at conversational levels; not at rant and rave levels.

I would suggest you change the title of the thread, the only bass players that have been taken for a ride are the ones that have indulged you and listened while you changed your mind various times.

It's apparent that you've changed your opinion on pickup companies ripping us off. I may suggest "DIY piezo, cheap, easy and sounds good".

Until you make this change I view you starting this thread with it's original intent; A good piezo only cost $4, and you are getting screwed. If your backing away from that change the title or ask a mod to do it for you....

I could not be any calmer! I just said that I have re-invented the wheels! Meaning that I invented jack ****! It is only special to me cos I made it! I also built a preamp for it only God knows why when I have a Fishman Pro-Eq platinum. It was a rainy day and I was bored. Instead of beating me up can anyone tell me of a piezzo other than Realist, Underwood, FC, wondering about BARCUS BERRY! something that blends well and dont have to use adjusters!
