Of course, you can easily buy unlined MightyMite necks on eBay, and MusiciansFriend now, for about 100 bucks, with a unlined fretless option, so you could upgrade the enck later.

cheap but decent fretless bass

I have tried one of these. Infact I tried both the fretted and fretless models as I got talking to the 'bass guy' in a big guitar shop in Edinburgh and we both went through the stock trying out stuff.
The bass was pretty good sounding, it had the burpy 'bwow' tone good.

Anyway, Squier VM fretless J-bass it will be, but I'm going to wait a couple of months... I need to work on my left hand (strenght), if I buy a BG now, I think I will go for the "easier" way all too often...
I just played a (used) Squier Fretless in the shop while auditioning a new amp. Really good bass, I was surprised. It's a great value price wise......the phenolic fingerboard works very well with rounds or flats, and is very stable.
As far as being "easier", hmm. I'd try to avoid that mind set if you are serious about this, because upright bass and bass guitar while being in the same family note range wise, are really different instruments.

In the US the Cort is almost 50% more expensive and I consider it well worth it; in Europe the difference is more like 10-15%. The Cort has a very nice feature set--cast bridge, hipshot-licensed tuners, Bartolini-branded MIK pickups and preamp, wenge/bubinga/maple laminated neck, ash body, and rosewood (not ebonol) fingerboard. This model also appears as the Ibanez SR500, but (at least in the US) the Ibanez isn't available fretless. This bass has far more tonal range than the Squier, an airier, woodier range of tones, and the most playable, comfortable 34" scale neck I've ever played.
Don't buy anything until you've played one.

Try and get your hands on one of those cheap but made in USA Music Man fretless basses and see how you like it.
It's very similar to the new classic series Sting Ray's and Sterling 4. It has a 2 band eq and a slab body.
The ones with the textured black bodies (I can't remember the name). They're only available unlined, but the one that I owned ( a 5 string) was great! It was only about $600 new.
