Cheap shop fix

I have built a couple of basses, but do a lot of other woodwork, including a lot of time on a wood lathe. As such, dealing with dust is a constant problem. I've gone through the usual fixes, but came of with two that I've found work fantastic, and wanted to share, and get reactions:

1. I've got one of these, which are meant to be mounted on the ceiling - either do that, or use it like in this photo, and it gets in the way. I built a mobile workstation (2'x4') surface, mounted on casters, with this just below the surface. This way I can easily move it anywhere in the shop, and it stays of out the way - best of both worlds.

2. I bought a cheap window fan ($20), and mounted it near my lathe, blowing out It clears plenty of dust, and can be removed easily when I am done to store easily.

makes my life a lot easier.

Nice, I do the cheap window fan thing as well. What exactly is that box?

That box keeps the kids in. Open it up when it's sweeping time and they get fed and stuck back in. Everyone has one, right?

The box is an air filter, usually meant to be installed on the ceiling.

Awesome! I personally would like to hear more about that DIY air filter you got there. I got a good deal on a used manufactured one (a stupid good deal!) but it doesn't move enough air for my liking. In-turn, I've been thinking about building one to add to the ceiling. Ironically, the design I've come up with revolves around one of those twin window fans.

I love any/everything built for your self in the shop, often I think I'm as obsessed with building my shop as I am my guitars. Good stuff thanks for sharing.

Cool stuff Bulldog. I can attest to the "dust box" filter as I call it. They work wonders in a "smaller" shop. much better than breathing this junk in. Mine is mounted on the ceiling, you can see it in this pic, my Jet collector is behind it in the corner. Then the old trusty shop vac. Below it

My shop is really small, so anything that can be mounted on casters can help. Those air filters generally are 1"H x 24"w x about 20"D. I built a frame out of 2x4s with 3 levels. The top level is counter height. I actually have replaceable tops - the main one is 2'x4' plywood to use as a work surface. The other one is my router table. Under that (with just enough room for the router to fit) is where I have the filter, so I can wheel it around the shop to where I am working. Under that is a little storage.

Also, I find that the disposable filter don't take away as much dust as I would like (working on a lathe kicks up a lot of dust), so I tape a second filter in place, and vacuum it after each use. On a regular basis, I remove the internal bag filter, and blow that out as well.
