Cheap Used Bass Question

I'm a total noob to electric bass. (I play upright) But I've always wanted to get into it. I just don't have anyone to play electric with :( I bought a MIA Fender P Bass a while back, but took it back the next day and swapped for an acoustic bass guitar which I can still play with my bluegrass band.

Anyway, there's a guy at work that's wanting to get rid of a bass. I took a look at it and it's in decent condition.

It's a Peavey Millennium BXP.

If I was going to give $75 for it. Would that be a better deal than buying a new MIM Fender P Bass or Squire? I know it's cheaper, but how's the quality on this thing?

Any insight is greatly appreciated, Thanks!

I am not sure on this particular Peavey bass, but I did have the Dyna Bass from Peavey a few decades ago and it was a decent bass.

I haven't tried the newer Fender models but did have a P-bass Fender Squire and Jazz bass, I liked the Peavey Dyna Bass much better than either one of the lower end Fender basses.

Best thing is if you can test drive that Peavey and see how it plays and sounds, that is a fair price for that model used. If it were to be offered to me I would definitely test it out.

Take care.

Really no way to test drive it. And I'll be perfectly honest, I wouldn't necessarily know if it sounds good or not. I have no experience with this sort of thing. I guess that's just something you "know"? Whether it sounds bad or not.

If I do get it, I'll need to buy an amp.

Yeah, the millenium usually sales for around $250, so 75 is a nice price. I don't think you could find a better bass on the market for only 75, Peavey's are usually pretty good for the price you pay. If you don't like the bass, you could always resale it, probably for more than $75 too. My first bass was a Peavey, and I am very pleased with it. As a beginner, you usually don't want to spend a whole lot on your first bass just in case you decide that the electric bass isn't for you, so I think this would be a very smart buy.

Buy it, then take it to a tech and have a setup done on it. When you get it back the strings should be well adjusted and the instrument should be ready to play. It may cost you as much for the setup as the bass, but every report I've heard on this Peavey series is positive. You'll be ready to go.

Buying an amp is a separate story, but there are plenty of threads on that here.

I have a peavey fury V and hate the thing with a passion. But to each his own, since there are people who rave about the thing.
What do you hate about it? In general I've liked the lower end Peavey basses - for what they are - but its always good to know what others think are faults/problems.

These BXPs don't reach the level of the USA made Peaveys, but honestly if you bought it at $75 you could probably sell it pretty easily for ~$150 if you ever decide to move up.
The Millennium BXP is a pretty good bass for a first time electric bassist.
