Cheapest bass you just LOVE

I have a $68 Ashton 5-string bass loaded with SD Qtr Pounders. Came with a case, a guitar strap and a tuner. The jazz pickup, the second tone pot and the input jack were not wired up. It had no strings and the control plate was a piece of flimsy see-thru plastic. Was sold to me by some guy from a Christian Church band. I removed the letters JE, added some decals to the body and the headstock, replaced the control panel, rewired the electronics and raised the pickup height. Now I have a 'go anywhere' kick arse 5 string bass. I never worry about where it is or what its leaning up against, or whose grubby hands have touched it. And, I sold the case, tuner and strap to re-coup the cost of the strings and the control plate. Bargain

Very innovative use of Jazz control plate there, Hilton. :p

This is my bass that I just love.
Aria STB Series.
Paid £40 for it, fitted a Quarter Pounder and Chromes and it plays and sounds amazing.
I'm selling off a few basses as I don't need them all but I just cannot bring myself to sell this one, I don't think we'll ever part.

I go with Bassist Jay. I also have two Ibanez SR 500s. I play a lot beachfront or over water and leave my Fenders home. The SRs sound fine, play easily and I love the way the solid mahogany body looks. Even when they were new they had a worn, classy look like they had a story to tell.

Another $200 score. Was shopping for an Ibanez SR700 or higher when I found this in a pawnshop. About 8-9 years old, but turns out it was in unplayed condition with only a few finish scratches that were likely from the shop--no fret wear or bridge corrosion and the plastic film was still on the control cavity plate.

Monster tone that's perfect for my band Televators, and after I fixed the neck-dive it plays and feels so good I can't put it down.
I'm a sucker for bound and blocked necks, and the finish matches my 1977 Ibanez Artist 2619 guitar--the Iceman series was their 1st original design after years of copying and the Artist was the 2nd.

$200 is my price for everything these days.
All 3 of my basses, plus a Peavey MKIII Bass head and 410TX cab were within $25 above or below that mark.
Patient shopping and the ability to spot the rare gems that might be a little dirty really pays off.
