Double Bass Cheapest EUB with same neck dimensions as DB

Hey all,

In a year or so I will get a DB, but I simply can't afford one right now, but I'd like to start working on my fingerings. Sound quality / electronics isn't really important. I just want a cheap EUB that has a neck that has the same dimensions as a DB, so 41.75 - 43" scale, same fingerboard radius for arco, and a D neck with the same bend on the back of the neck where it meets to body.

Is there anything out like this out there?

If you're a year away from a DB, that'll work out about right since it might take you about that long to get the Stagg or the Palatino fixed up to a playable condition. Neither is particularly well known for their quality. For the price of a new Palatino you might luck into a used NXT or Ergo. Both are stand mounted "sticks" but have similar dimensions to a DB and have a reputation for better quality. There are also some BSX models that might be found that would fit your criteria. Just my 2cents and worth what you paid for it.

The Stagg does not have the bridge curvature of an acoustic double bass but less. So it is a bit harder to bow avoiding unwanted double string bowing. The strings have a lot less tension than an acoustic bass, usable medium to higher tension strings cost some money and the Stagg might not be able to hold the tension resulting in a headstock break.

Better keep your money and get the real thing. Or buy a cheap used laminate acoustic (with a good setup) for the same money if you find such a thing. Even if you buy a better one later this one can be used open air and in tight spaces.

Good EUBs cost almost as much as good acoustic basses. Cheaper ones alost always have some weaknesses. It depends on you if they become a problem for your intended use.

Hi I was just browsing posts on TB about upright bass neck thicknesses an came upon this. Have you looked at the Eninence EUB? I have played I and I can honestly say it has the most realistic neck of any EUB I've ever played. It's actually a real upright bass neck mounted on a small viol shaped body. It feels very natural. I am currently selling my Azola bass to get an Eminence. Good luck!

I needed this and couldn't find what I wanted, so I built my own to match the neck of my Upton Standard Lam. Feels great! Been thinking of making another, but starting with one of those Chinese kits you find on ebay. For around $210, you get a maple neck (that needs to be finished), ebony fingerboard, tuners, bridge, endpin, lousy strings, etc. Before I ordered one, I'd want to confirm certain specifics of material and dimensions, but this would allow you to finish out an EUB with an UB feel for less than $300.
