Check if a speaker works w/ smartphone ?

Hey !

So i'm about to buy a second hand 15" Markbass speaker but due to my working hours, we can only meet at a parking lot, minutes before he goes to work. The amp is 350€ worth so either i trust him and prey for the speaker to work well, either i find a way to quick-test the speaker. Do you have any ?

My father told me that when he sold my old bass amp combo, the guy that came used his phone to check if it works. But my father didn't told me how he did exactly and also it was a combo so there was some amplification which will not be the case for me.

You can test for continuity in the voice coil with a multimeter and a guitar cable. You can also do it with a 9V battery.

To test it with a battery, just plug the cable into input jack and touch the positive post of the battery to the tip of the cable and the negative to the sleeve. The cone should make thump, move forward and stay there as long as the battery is contacting the cable. Turn the battery over and touch the negative to the tip and the positive to the sleeve and the cone will move backward in the same way. You just need to be able to see the cone.

But, that won't tell you if the cone is separating or otherwise damaged.

And, no it will not hurt the speaker in any way, There is far more voltage on the coil when it is being played.

Of course, even better is to take a small amp along and test it along with anything that has an output signal.

A smart phone MAY be able to drive the speaker at a very low level, but won't give you a very complete picture of condition.

Ok so unless i have some form of amplification and a bass to plug, there's no way to know if it works really good. :/
