How is this at all wankery/overplaying? He's doubling the guitar parts instead of playing the same boring root notes that every other mediocre metal/rock bass player usually defaults to. I realize this may not be everyone's cup o' tea, but give credit where credit is due. Groove and subtlety are not what this style of music is about and besides, this song was clearly made to be a demonstration of his technique.
When I listen to metal, I appreciate it when ALL the instruments are doing something cool, not just the guitars (and sometimes drums). And oftentimes that does mean just hanging back and playing the roots, but it's refreshing to hear a bass player has the chops and the desire to match up with the guitar when he needs to. Plus, when he plays a purely supporting role, he plays the same rhythm patterns that the guitar plays and makes it clear and articulate without having to play with a pick.
Check out Animetal Marathon IV for a better example of this guy's playing in a band context. That live solo, on the other hand, was... unfortunate. Better luck next time, Masaki!

It took me all of 5 seconds to realize this guy is a master bassist.
