cheep G****r volume problem

I just picked up a cheep strat copy hiding:start the guitard jokes now), but the electronics had been messed with. it is a hss configuration and looked like it had been rewired at lest twice. anyway, I used [Invalid or Expired Link Removed] diagram to rewire it only to discover the volume pot was bad so i went to the local guitar shop and picked up a new push pull pot to add a coil tap to the bucker. so everything got wired up again but now the volume seems to be all bunched up around 9-10 and anything lower is dead. What is my problem?

Is the push-pull pot you got an audio taper or a liner taper? Is it the same resistance value as the old one?

i think the old one might have been 500k but it didn't say and since it doesn't work right i can't use the multimeter to find out

In looking at that diagram, I'm not sure what the #14 pot is supposed to do, since there's nothing attached to the center terminal. It's just acting as a fixed resistor.

Am I missing something?

And where's the output connection? I really don't get that diagram.

I took it to mean that 14 was the volume and the output should attach to the middle terminal, but I could be wrong

Fender indicates that should be a 250K pot.

And yes, it would appear that the output should connect to the middle terminal.

the new pot is a 250k so that isn't the problem. would the other 2 being 500 make a difference?

I don't think the other 2 being 500K would affect the volume. I almost wonder if you'd be better off with a linear taper pot instead of an audio taper in this instance.

It definitely sounds like something related to the pot and/or how it's wired.

According to at least one site, yes.

I have had similar issues with at least one Strat I have owned and I have heard others talk about similar problems. For the life of me I can't recall what the solution I've read has been.

Not sure if this is it or not, but it would sure be easy to put a temporary jumper to at least eliminate it.
