Chevelle's Bass Effects?

If you listen to The Clincher off of "This Type of Thinking..." a fuzz blended with a little clean signal is pretty easy to hear as the guitar doesn't really do anything during the majority of the song. The verse is soloed bass as far as I remember.

A Big Muff with a two amp setup or a looper would get you most of the way there.

Newer songs like Brainiac have overdriven bass. The new bassist uses a TBird through 3 Mesa 610's with Mesa amps with tube preamps live. I'd imagine he used a similar setup during recording.

Good Luck figuring out something that gets close to those tones.

I just saw Chevelle earlier this month supporting a band here in Australia. The bassplayer had 2x Thunderbirds. One black and one white. The only pedal I could see was the ODB-3 (but I couldn't see the whole board).

On another note though, I gotta say the show was terrible! The guitarist / singer was ok, but that bass player is a total card (needs to be dealt with).

I was leaning on the stage infront of him next to a young couple who where doing the same. For some reason, he just wouldn't give them a break. First he came walking over and just blatantly trod on the female of the couple...Then he kept coming over and sticking his head stock in their face in a REALLY weird way. Like he was about to jam them in the face with it. Next he decided to keep throwing picks at them and finally he just got on the mic and announced to everyone that he loved us all apart from the two idiots down the front (who had done nothing). Anyway, they soon left the venue.

Considering he totally sucked live (worst tone ever and his constant punching his bass technique was annoying) I don't know where he got off. At least, from what I could see, they got a really hard time off people after their set.

Anyhoo, sorry for the rant, but its uncalled for behaviour. They may be getting somewhere in the states, but here they are nothing and with an attitude problem, they never will be.

Yeah I lost a lot of respect for Chevelle after all that happened....Joe was the drive behind the band. His tone was what originally turned me on to them. Pete is a good guitarist, but obviously keeps things simple considering he is the only guitarist and does lead vocals. Dean uses a Mesa Bigblock 750, which is a head I love, I use the same. But I'm not a fan of his eq along with the boss pedal, he has too much crunch and gain on it, it doesn't sound like Chevelle without Joe. They have just become huge jerks the past couple of years, even in the way they approach their crowd at shows. Their ego is to big for their own good...kinda funny how they originally claimed to be a Christian band when the first started. haha.

Technically, they were never a Christian band. Their very first label was a Christian label, and thus everyone labeled them that.

I've seen Chevelle live twice when Joe was the bassist, and they were horrible. They sound good on cd, but seeing them live ruined it for me.
