Chevelle's Bass Effects?

I just saw Chevelle earlier this month supporting a band here in Australia. The bassplayer had 2x Thunderbirds. One black and one white. The only pedal I could see was the ODB-3 (but I couldn't see the whole board).

On another note though, I gotta say the show was terrible! The guitarist / singer was ok, but that bass player is a total card (needs to be dealt with).

I was leaning on the stage infront of him next to a young couple who where doing the same. For some reason, he just wouldn't give them a break. First he came walking over and just blatantly trod on the female of the couple...Then he kept coming over and sticking his head stock in their face in a REALLY weird way. Like he was about to jam them in the face with it. Next he decided to keep throwing picks at them and finally he just got on the mic and announced to everyone that he loved us all apart from the two idiots down the front (who had done nothing). Anyway, they soon left the venue.

Considering he totally sucked live (worst tone ever and his constant punching his bass technique was annoying) I don't know where he got off. At least, from what I could see, they got a really hard time off people after their set.

Anyhoo, sorry for the rant, but its uncalled for behaviour. They may be getting somewhere in the states, but here they are nothing and with an attitude problem, they never will be.

Ok i've seen alot of videos of them live and the bass tone was amazing. I've also seen interviews and he seems like a really nice guy. My friend's guitar teacher is also best friends with Dean and my friend's guitar teacher is a really nice guy when i met him. I'm sure he wouldnt be friends with a jerk.

You realize the Gibson Thunderbird has a neck dive, so that could have been the reason. Also throwing picks into a crowd... come on, i wouldn't find that offensive, I'd find it nice of Dean to offer free picks. What he said in the end... come on its a JOKE!! I can call all my friends idiots and they wouldn't care at all, because they know i'm joking with them.

Anyways, Dean is a very unique bassist and is a great addition to Chevelle. Joe and Dean both have a unique style of playing the bass and apparently, they both sound good so I'm fine with that.

"Sticking his head stock in their face in a REALLY weird way" and neck dive are two different things and there's probably a difference between throwing picks into the crowd and throwing picks at a couple of people and then calling idiots....

+1

To be fair, I have seen a number of gigs at this venue and some nights the sound is pretty terrible. Other nights its great. I've have been dissapointed with some of my favorite bands there before, so i'll not comment any more than to say, on the night, they sounded terrible (the band before and after did not have the same problem though).

With regard to headstock pointing, it wasn't neck dive. Not unless the bass had a mind of its own / was being controlled by the devil and he was trying his hardest to stop it biting these people in the face. IMO, He was being a dick.

Also, with the picks, he wasn't ramdomly throwing them. He was staring at these guys flicking them with a look on his face like 'your lucky they are picks and not spit, cos I want to spit on you right now'...

The way I saw it, from about 1m away, was that he saw a couple sitting on the edge of the stage and thought he would grace them with his international band / god like presence. As he came over, by accident, he trod straight on the girls hand. This meant that the guy and the girl ignored all his gyrating around in front of them while they nursed her hand. Not too happy with their lack of response to him, he then went on to single them out for the rest of the set by flicking picks, menacing them with his bass and crotch and finally pointing them out to the audience as idiots. :hmm:

Perhaps he is a great guy with killer tone? Who knows? I can only comment on my one nights experience, in which he was a total snugglemuffin.

YMMV.
