CHICK COREA - LEGACY with Hadrien Feraud on bass

Are you in L.A? Hadrien is playing at the Piano Bar this friday and next wed.

No, I'm in Houston.

Please, if you could, tell him
(1) not to get mad at his newly adopted city for it,

(2) if John McLaughlin and Chick Corea fired him, maybe his true destiny is to lead, not to be led.
It's more difficult but Hadrien can do it.

(3) maybe Hadrien could record an album called,
"Hadrien plays Steve Swallow à la Pino Palladino"
(It's only a joke, please be advised).

In my opinion, currently Hadrien is the most technically advanced electric bass player in the world, and any emotional or stressful situations will only perfect his intricately beautiful basslines adored by so many around the world.

lol. send him an e-mail.

Chic, fired Hadrien recently because of the same reasons John McLaughlin Fired him... Too many notes, and TOO LOUD! the young man should learn some lessons from this...

I've gathered some facts from various sources about those half-truths and gossip related to Hadrien's "firing".

1. The main reason that Hadrien is not touring with Chick Corea & the Vigil is this -
Chick Corea wanted to have a bass player who would be able to play the double/upright bass.
To my regret (or maybe not), Hadrien does not play the upright bass.
It was known in 2012, before Chick Corea started recording his album, "The Vigil" with Hadrien Feraud.

One more time, Chick Corea had several bass player choices - cream of the crop - to record his new album, "the Vigil", but decided to go with Hadrien Feraud.

Can anyone tell me WHY?

N.B. It's a rhetorical question.

The rest is history. Chick Corea released an outstanding album.

"The good news is this: The Vigil is certainly Corea's best electric album in decades, and one which capitalizes on the fact that blending acoustic and electric music together under one roof is no longer the anathema it once was."

2. Why did John McLaughlin "fire" Hadrien Feraud?

Before I proceed with my findings, I would like to ask a few questions?

How often does a/an jazz musician/instrumentalist play with different musicians?
Is it normal for a jazz musician to record/play with different musicians?
Do we always know the "true" reasons why a superb musician decides to record a new album with a new keyboard/guitar/sax/bass/drum player?

Now, about John McLaughlin.
I truly believe that McLaughlin - "the spiritual guru" -decided to split with Hadrien due to some "ego" issues.

Yes, I've read McLaughlin's remarks about the "firing".
I think JM broke some unwritten rules by saying things that were hurtful to other musician.
If I am correct, in Buddhism you cannot even hurt a worm.

Next.

I've re-read some two-year old threads about Hadrien Feraud at TB.

In my opinion some of those comments were really mean-spirited and very unfriendly.

What's more, when a member of TB and the superb bass player, Roy Vogt, said something about "working with JM",
some "emotional" bass players did not want to listen.

In short, we, the "citizens of the bass player nation", attacked our own, a "first-class" and currently the "hottest" bass player in the world.

I know I'll get some responses; therefore, more of my comments in the future.

Exactly.
Any bassist who has the talent to play with Chick Corea, let alone record an album with him, gets my respect. Not interested in trying to devine the interpersonal/intermusician nuances. Both Chick and Hadrien will go on to make great music. All is good. Just glad Chick is still here making great music for us, he's not a young guy anymore.

I know that Mac fired Feraud for being too loud. I didn't know it had anything to do with too many notes.

Here is what I know about Hadrien's playing "too many notes".

When journalists wrote splendid reviews about Hadrien Feraud's bass playing on John McLaughlin's 2007 North American tour, John McLaughlin asked Hadrien to play a little bit "weaker".

Here is a video of John McLaughlin & The 4th Dimension

performing LIVE "Senor CS" during the 2007 North American Tour.

I've re-listened to "Floating Point" and "To the One" albums.
I don't want to start any bassists' "boxing matches".
I just recommend to listen meticulously to two basslines from the compositions,
"Five Peace Band" with Hadrien and
"Discovery" with Etienne Mbappe,
and you'll hear for yourself the difference.

I've heard that if you're a bass player Chick has a sound guy that comes in and sets your volume levels for you before you can even plug in and that they are not to be touched - maybe I wouldn't want that either.

I was fooled by your gossip and now I need to apologize to Bernie Kirsh, "who has been working with Chick since the '70s—he's responsible for a lot of the beautiful, clear sound you hear at Chick's concerts and on his albums".

I have re-listened to John McLaughlin's "Industrial Zen" and "Floating Point" albums, where I almost needed to have some kind of "hearing-the-bass-aid" gadget in order to enjoy music; therefore, I would like to say Thanks to Bernie Kirsh for the "close-to-perfection", "beautiful and clear sound" on Chick Corea's "the Vigil".

Chill out, Hadrien can speak for himself he doesn't need anyone to be a white knight for him ;)

I think Hadrien, with his broken English, really tried to speak for himself, but very few and, probably, good bass players were "less then polite" (did I say, mean-spirited?) to Hadrien Feraud, and to my regret, Hadrien not only deleted his postings but also stopped participating in any TB discussions.
I seriously doubt that the TalkBass forum gained anything from silencing Hadrien Feraud.
What's more, I think thousands of aspiring bassists from all over the world lost a lot from silencing Hadrien at TB.

I've read the thread, "What happened to Hadrien Feraud" and tried to respond, but the thread was closed; therefore, I'll respond here.

Comment: "I'm not trying to be sarcastic but what ferocious stuff is Hadrien doing? and what has he done since he was booted from the JM gig?"

My answer: Hadrien recorded an outstanding album with Chick Corea, "the Vigil". You can purchase it on line.

Comment: "Hadrien holds the title for the one who got fired."

My answer: currently, Hadrien holds the title of the most technically advanced bass player in the world with unique, rhythmically-intricate, modernly-melodious, and highly sophisticated basslines.

Comment: "Hadrien, believe me there is nothing I need to know or want to know about you. Nothing at all."

My answer: Hadrien, thousands of bass players all over the world are listening to your records and watching closely your videos. And they really want to know more about your playing.

Comment: "Again, did someone say HF wasn't a good player? Really?? I don't recall seeing that mentioned."

My answer: DWBass, I heard you play. You are a great bass player, but I doubt that you could miss personal attacks on Hadrien.
You are absolutely correct. There was nothing said about Hadrien's stunning playing.
The mood and some unkind comments that I've read, were aimed at Hadrien as a person. I wish the bass players were talking about Hadrien's delicately-articulated fast notes in solos, but no, the thread was personal.

Comment: And lots of French people! (?!)

My answer: No comment.

Comment: "I knoooooooooooow who you are"

My answer: I hope it's not ME.

Umm Hadrien speaks pretty good English. I'm sure you'd know this since it seems like you've spoken to him and obviously are getting your "facts" from him directly and not from internet forum posts and stories on websites right?. ;)

Like I said, I can only go off of what I've heard from friends who work with him and know him personally.

Bottom line - he's a great bass player.

henry2513,

I'm getting my information from my ears ( listen, listen, and listen), my eyes ( it's YouTube videos), and from a very open source, the TB thread called, "What happened to Hadrien Feraud".
http://www.talkbass.com/forum/f28/what-happened-hadrien-feraud-903435/

Some comments from that thread made me very upset as a bass player and a human being.

I can only imagine what some bassists at TB would have said about the JACO PASTORIUS' vicissitudes of life.

("When you talk of the vicissitudes of life, you're referring to the difficult times that we all go through: sickness, job loss, and other unwelcome episodes. No one can escape the vicissitudes of life.")

The following is the composition, "Aftertouch"
from Chick Corea's "Five Trios" recorded in 2007.

Corea, Feraud, Barshay

More Hadrien's music.

Dean Brown Group - Santo para mim - JazzrockTV
Guitar : Dean Brown
E. Vibes : Bernard Maseli
Bass : Hadrien Féraud (solo at 6:10)
Drums : Marvin "Smitty" Smith

Bottom line - he's a great bass player.

I agree with you 1000%.
What was the reason for those personal attacks against Hadrien Feraud?

One more thing.

A month ago, I was overwhelmingly attacked for calling Stanley Clarke, "the true master of the bass".

Now, I am defending Hadrien Feraud at the TalkBass forum, the internet's largest bass guitar and double bass forum community!

It's really weird.

A lot of what happened in that thread was deleted. You probably wouldn't know that from reading it now so many of your responses are probably giving people who did read it in real time at least a chuckle. As such one of your main sources sucks. You don't know what you missed but you clearly seem to know what you want to believe. It was a weird thread to say the least.

So was the Youtube vigilantism that followed. Hadrien's a major talent and I hope the same thing didn't happen again.

careful using absolute terms in music converstions where everything is in a state of flux. Whousedtoplay just last month I said I'd never knock anyones "hustle" meaning if that's how he banks dollars, good for him. But I remember you posting a conversation about Linley Marthe when Zawinul kinda suggested that as great as Linley is, he showed a proclivity towards "overplaying" at times. That kind of thing happens when you're announced as the best thing going..and whether there are some who think HF is immune to that, the reality is he's as human as everybody else.

I really sense something big, something GRANDE, GRANDIOSE in your statement, but for some reason, I cannot decipher it.
I need your help.

I'm not going to rehash that thread, suffice it to say that you missed quite a lot and as such don't have as clear a picture as you think. Most of the real drama was deleted. It was not dull.

Nothing grandiose about what I said IMO.
