Choosing an 8x10

the fact is, if you're looking at buying an 8x10, there's only one choice - Just pick your year carefully - Ampeg went through some tough years...

You're right - there is only "one choice" - MESA!!! which, hasn't ever had any "tough years"...

Honestly, if you havent had a chance to check out one of the NEWER Ampeg SVT-810e's since the Loud Technologies takeover you owe it to yourself to do so...

These are, in my opinion and in the opinions of many others here on TB, FAAARR superior to the last few years run of these cabs from SLM. They're all plywood, 13 ply birch, have Eminence drivers, are all properly screwed with T-Nuts, have ample, high-quality sound dampening in the chambers and are IMHO louder and much clearer than they have been in the past.... much better hi-mid and treble response.

That being said, the absolute LOUDEST, CLEAREST, MOST CHEST THUMPING 810 available on the market today is the Genz Benz Uber 810. That thing will burst your Spleen if you stand too close to it!

i was just reading the ampeg website about the svt 810av enclosure. it says you would need 5x18 inch speakers to move the same amount of air as an svt. what a joke! it takes 2 svt's just to come close to one of my 2x18 & horn cabs. johnny a/ staind

That is just insane! Thank goodness for roadies... How are you running that rig, crossed over or all full range?

Well as you see from my Pic I vote for the Megoliath. I just picked this baby up today after trading of one of my Goliath 410's. I got tired of packing 2 cabs around and find it eazier by myself to move the 810.. Awesome sounding amazing lowend...She a Beaut!!All The Best Cheers Mate!!

Yeah, those and SWR's Goliath Sr are some of the best cabs on the market, IMO...

canadian, how would you describe the lows from the megoliath? Tight and deep, or boomy and overpowering, or something else?

I would say tight and deep...and very Punchy..anything but boomy... The again if a person eqs' the heck out of it and gets rid of all your his and mids then yes of course it will boom.. But other then that very clear very clean and tight.... the other thing that is really nice about it is it only has one horn as compared to the 2 i had when running the 2 410s.. way less horn hiss and alot nicer to dial in to the right amount!! All i all...It kicks like a mule....you have to feel them to know what i am talking about!!

This cab just sounds awesome. Easier to lug around than a 8x10, and it moves enough air for any situation I can imagine.

I had an swr goliath Sr. 610 and i did not find it any easier... in fact i was a lil harder for the fat it only had one resisted handle on top and no handles on the bottom...so it was harder to pack up stairs....and it only weighted about 35 lb's lighter the my Megoliath!!

Well, I've pretty much eliminated the Ashdowns...just not enough info. So now, I'm either looking at the Megoliath that I can get locally, or a mesa or Ampeg...crap, my choices are expanding, not contracting! I've even thought of the mesa 610 and later adding a mesa 215 later. If I was to go this route, Mesa is the only one I can find where the ohms of the 215 would match up to the 610 or 810....I'm thinking this is overkill though, for where I would need to play. As far as Ampegs, well, it would probably be either a heritage or svt 810. Seems like the current 810E has some construction or durability issues, that I've seen in spots here lately.

But the NV610 is 15 lbs. lighter than the SWR 610, and was pretty easy to maneuver the one time I moved one--perhaps in part because its depth is only 15". The SWR is 18.5" deep.
