Chord Tones (Help)

I know the 1-3-5-7 of a chord but I feel like I am missing something when it comes to using it to play a bassline for a song if that makes any sense. Hoping someone can shed some light on this for me.

Ed Friedand's 3 bass method books (with CD's) are great for this. Book #3 covers it specifically. These with an instructor make a great learning combo.
