chorus pedal placement or replacement?

ok, so here's my current setup:
Bass (Passive P bass)> Morley A/B> Boss GE7B EQ> EH Russian Big Muff> EH Russian Bassballs> EH Russian Small Stone> Biyang Tremolo> Boss BF2 Flanger> EH Nano Clone Chorus> Boss TU2 Tuner> Amp (GB GBE 600/4x10)

soon to add a vt bass, that's another thread....

the issue:
the nano clone is noisy and drops my signal.

experiments:
1.i tried bypassing everything, same problem.
2.i tried the effects loop. it added unpleasant distortion.

do i just need a different pedal?

is there another approach i'm not thinking of?

i figure if isolating the pedal by bypassing everything else (guitar>pedal>amp) has the same issue, then where it's at in the chain doesn't much matter?

definitely volume drop, iirc, also noise. i am reading that this is just an issue with these pedals and that is supposedly why eh dropped it and introduced the neo clone.

maybe i need to experiment with a different pedal. i would rather replace than add a boost or extra loop pedal and lose board real estate.....

any other ideas? does any of this sound logical, or am i just getting frustrated and ignoring an easier solution?

If it's making noise and you dislike the volume drop then you're making sense wanting to replace it.

I am not currently a chorus user, but analog man seems to get a lot of love on here for his.

I would avoid EHX for choruses, but I'm not a big fan of EHX anything though. They have some cool ideas, but execution lacks IMO and everything I've tried from them has been too noisy for my taste, or like you've mentioned, had volume issues. I'm totally OCD about noise in my chain and keeping volume at unity throughout, so EHX doesn't make the cut.

I don't particularly dig traditional speed/depth chorus sounds, so I use a detuner for my chorus needs, specifically an Iron Ether Polytope. I've also had the Tech21 Bass Boost Chorus which is an excellent pedal (and does do regular chorus if you're into that sound), and I've also used the detune mode on a Boss PS-5. If you're feeling saucy, you could also try a Fromel Seraph, which I've also used (and still own).

Like Unrepresented said, Analogman seems to get a lot of love around TB, I've heard good things about the T-rex Sweeper, and I was able to check out the new MXR Bass Chorus in person a couple weeks ago... very nice as well.

Replace the EHX with something else. You want to, you just don't know it for sure yet. ;) :P

Tech 21 Bass Boost Chorus-

-It's got a Detune feature which give you a super chorus sound WITHOUT the modulation warble! Brilliant! Still has the speed & depth knobs if you want "traditional" chorus.

-It's got a Multi-Voice button which will help it if you want to use it with a distortion pedal.

-It's got a Boost knob, which solves your volume drop issue. Be careful with that, as it will add some noise.

It's a great chorus pedal. A bit pricey, but those few features make it worthwhile. Good luck with whatever you decide....:bassist:

No problem, and exactly why I switched to a Detuner for Chorus. My first chorus pedal was a Stereo Clone Theory from EHX. Perfect sound in my head, but OMG it sounded like Niagra Falls, the hiss was so bad.

Keep your eye on the classifieds here, try Ebay (search for bass chorus pedal), or even one of your local shops that do used gear. You might also check around at pawn shops, if you have a good one for music gear in your area.

Even the Boss Bass Choruses are fairly nice, I had a CEB-3 for a while.

probably will scour the stores local, probably buy used.....

had a ceb3 a while back, wasn't a fan, but that could have been user error. it was one of my first effects and my setup was different in every way back then! maybe i'll give it another shot.

the tech 21 looks cool, but i just dropped almost $200 on a vt bass that's on it's way, so i'm a bit gun shy on the price!

Aside from the Polytope, the Tech21 BBC is really the only other chorus pedal I'd use in my rig. The only reason I got rid of it is because I have the Polytope and I didn't need the traditional chorus side of the BBC. Because the Tech21 does both kinds of chorus, there really isn't a chorus sound it can't do.
