Chorus pedals, what are they good for?

I'm the one a bit confused here, you can play any bassline without effects if you want, and it would still work to some extend, though it might sound better with.

Any effect is just a flavor added to the melodic and rhythmic foundation, not really absolutely vital as such, this is especially true for bass maybe.

This, along with several post punk songs from the 80's does have a pretty prominent and iconic application of bass chorus, where playing without it would just not be quite right, though you could still get the song done:

I don't hear chorus on the bass here. That's guitar playing the famous chorused part.

Is there any song which you can't play the Bassline without chorus pedal?

A lot of 80's New Wave and post punk. the Cure's been mentioned already. Lots of Peter Hook tracks (Joy Division /New Order) are dripping with the Clone Theory chorus which is his signature tone. This is a good example....

I didn’t care for it personally. It seemed a bit thin or brittle when I tried it.

My favs have been the EHX Bass Clone, Tech 21 Bass Boost Chorus, and Boss CE-2w

They are good for making your bass sound like it’s underwater. Which can sound cool depending on the song, or it can be quite lame sounding like most of the 80s.

For me it’s my boss ceb3 always on with the filter only affecting high frequencies... means when I play on the d and g strings it cuts through the mix and when I slap the lower strings remain unaffected. Just gives me a nice shimmer to cut through metal guitars!

Nope! I want my chorus dripping wet across every string. Different strokes though, right?!

Yep for sure... in my metal band I want my low B to be ringing loud and strong even if distorted or not... feel a low B with Chorus wouldn’t work so well

As Nunovsky said, a chorus can give you a 'fretless-like' tone. Obviously, not 100% but can give you a bit of the warbley-note sound.
