Having both wood combos myself, I'm partial for the bubinga when I want something nice n' growly to get in yer face, but the maple/alder is a nice and soft tone seems to be my favorite.

Interesting, they are definitely similar basses but the differences are very noticeable. FWIW I would liked to have heard the "scales" recording with the pickup selection knob in the center. Thanks for posting this!

I DO have the priviledge of currently owning 2 Peavey Cirrus USA's. I've owned about 4 or 5.

I now own - Walnut/Bubinga and Alder/Flamed Maple.

I used to own Alder/Redwood and Alder/Flamed Maple w/ maple fretboard.

I love the tone of MY 1999 walnut/bubinga - Here it is on my CD - go to Link Removed It is the second year of the Cirrus and it plays like MELTED better ! (that's BETTER than real butter !)

It sounds like that live, too. BUT - BUT - my alder/flamed maple is WAY louder and deeper toned. More 3 dimensional.

I liked the LOOK of the alder/redwood the best, but liked the sound the least FOR ME. It was thin and not great for hard rock, but great for jazz.

I regret selling my alder/maple w/ maple fretboard. Very pronounced fingerboard. It got that maple "clickity clack".

I am now on the hunt for a walnut/wendge.

So, in closing what sounds better ? My walnut/bubinga is pretty darn close to sounding like a 1986 Wal Geddy Lee bass ala "Hold Your Fire" - in my opinion the BEST bass tone on record. Simple "pure". I ALWAYS get compliments on my walnut/bubinga tone.

Thanks! That was a really interesting listen.

I'm not a huge "tonewood" guy when it comes to electric instruments but I will say there was definitely a subtle but noticeable difference. The Bubinga bass was a little "grittier."
