Clashes even before first gig

Well, I was in a band once with a very well-meaning BL who had been a singer in metal bands and was not the most accomplished musician in any room, but a super nice guy. We brought in a fiddle player who almost immediately decided that it was his job to change arrangements we'd already worked out and impose a bunch of musical rules about how many verses before a chorus, when you should put in a bridge, etc.

He was undoubtedly a more accomplished musician than the BL but between the rest of us we'd cobbled together some fairly decent arrangements and there was nothing really wrong with whatever it is that fiddle player had decided to "fix." So that didn't work out very well. The guy was trying to bully his way into a position of authority that didn't really need to be filled.

Some people might be competent but a little too forceful in the way they wield their competence. I've been the most accomplished player in several bands and I'd never dream of shoving my arrangements at a band as though they were rules that Must Be Obeyed. There are ways to get your thoughts across without resorting to that, and if you can't get your thoughts out there in a way that they're considered then the problem probably isn't you-- been there and done that, as well.

So, hard to know what happened here, but if the BL has the skills to lead, people should let him do that, or give him thoughtful feedback that he can take on board in a way that doesn't feel too intrusive.

Thank you, that is very constructive advice.

What is happening here is that the band leader and I and the two fiddlers (originally classically trained) and the guitar player (also a veteran blues drummer) have approximately 200 years combined experience playing and being in bands. We can figure out arrangments and cooperating.
