We play Sweet Home, Three Steps, Simple Man, and Saturday Night Special. Guess which ones get the best response? Yeah, the first two...
You poor soul.

What's thriving in Dallas is freaking tribute bands. We've got tribs around here for Cure, Zeppelin, Queen, Heart, Tom Petty, Beatles, Red Hot Chili Peppers, The Doors and Stevie Ray Vaughn just to name a few off the top of my head, and there's a lot more.

The problem here seems to be that the market is saturated with really bad "Classic Rock" cover bands. The first thing a lot of club owners are saying even before they hear you is "No Classic Rock".

I can only speak for NC. The problem here seems to be that the market is saturated with really bad "Classic Rock" cover bands. The first thing a lot of club owners are saying even before they hear you is "No Classic Rock"
There is nothing like classic rock tunes when they are played correctly/accurately. The last several CR bands I have listened to were just plan awful. They sounded like bad tab amateurs. I mean really horrible. Kind of like walking into a Guitar Center.
Wow, that's just really strange to discount a whole important era of music like that. Also, it's really limiting them as a cover band that plays music from that era. A general audience isn't going to make a huge distinction between early American rock 'n roll, doo-wop, and British Invasion music in that ambiguous time period between when certain music is classified as "oldies" or "classic rock." They're going to seriously be perplexed why the band can play Peggy Sue and Blue Suede Shoes but not My Girl or Saw Her Standing There.
I totally agree. Speaking personally, I'm burned out on the classic rock cover scene for the same reason I'm burned out on classic rock radio: The same exact songs have been beat to death.
And it's not like there's a dearth of material to play. Take Lynyrd Skynyrd for example. What two songs do bands and the radio stations play? Sweet Home Alabama and Gimme Three Steps - once in a great while I'll hear Simple Man. Those are great songs; however, Lynyrd Skynrd has a very deep and high-quality song catalog. There's a ton of accessible material from Lynrd Skynrd that hasn't been beaten beyond recognition. I'd love to walk into a club and hear a band tear up Saturday Night Special or Workin' for MCA or Double Trouble or I've Been Your Fool.
But of course, I say that as someone who is passionate about music. Maybe the casual music listener is cool with Sweet Home Alabama instead of Needle and the Spoon or Brown Eyed Girl instead of Moondance or The Joker instead of Swingtown. But I'm not saying you have to play these obscure deep cuts. I just think that you could have a successful classic rock band that doesn't play all of the stuff that's been overplayed by everyone else.

We are definitely a classic rock band. Our newer "hipper" songs are from the 80s![]()
For one gig we played to a younger, almost entirely female, audience. We usually provide prerecorded music between sets. One of the audience members comes up and asks if they can use their ipod into the PA. I never have a problem with this, and away we went.
During breaks, we played LMFAO, Lady Gaga, Rihanna, Blacked Eyed Peas, etc. During the sets; classic rock. The dance floor never cleared! Although it was slightly more packed when we played.
Classic rock may be dying, but it is going down swinging!![]()

Obscure deep cuts? Poison Whiskey and Railroad Song are deep cuts, not Saturday Night Special or Working for MCA.
I'm starting to give some serious thought to being the BL to the next project whenever I'm done with my current band. If that's the case, I may push to spend a little bit longer in the rehearsal room to learn some tunes that we haven't been playing our entire musical careers. Hmm...![]()
And no Brown Eyed Girl!!! But we had two other Van Morrison songs. Here's the way we handled requests for Brown Eyed Girl:
Drunken Female: PLAY BROWN EYED GIRL!!!!
Us: Sure...what's your name?
Drunken Female: SSSSHHHHEILA (or "Tiffany" or "Brandi" or whatever)
Us: We have another Van Morrison song you'll really like
Us: Here's a special song for SSSSHHHHEILA (or "Tiffany" or "Brandi" or whatever) cause we think she's having a wild night tonight! (And then we launched into "Wild Night".)
I don't get the hate for brown eyed girl. It's a fun song, the crowd loves it, and it has a bass solo.
