Last week I acquired a 1981 Fender (not Squier) bass (made in Korea). I buy and sell alot of Fenders and was impressed in the quality of this bass. Neck is very good, frets and finish are very good. It is extremely light, probably under 8 lbs. It has a very nice Lacquer (I think) blonde finish. Very good tone. I paid $300 which was more than I would normally pay but it was a very nice (mint condition) bass

Bass on the left is an 85 Squire. I bought it to back up my 65 Jazz Bass. I have owned it since 1991. Great Bass made in Japan. On the right a Modern Day Squire VM Jazz

I have a Korean Squier guitar, great quality.

Its one of the first to be made in korea during the late 80's as its stamped with a serial number beginning with M, something that MIK Squiers (or any i believe) never had, yet reads 'Made In Korea'

Picked it up for $80

Yes, well, I bought a signature Squier bass to start on, because I was amazed at the FAR superior build and component quality of what I have over equally priced basses from other manufacturers. The neck on my Squier is beautifully finished. A couple of the other brands had a neck I was afraid I was going to get splinters from...dried glue showing from under the fingerboard...really crude stuff.

I'm wondering, do $250 Squier components and $2500 Fender parts come from the same pile? One goes to the highline side because of some minute quality difference?

Sorry to disagree, but that "1981 Fender Bass that was Made in Korea" is a fake. The very first country in Asia to make Fender is Japan in 1982.

In a word, no. Squiers and Fenders are not even made in the same country anymore, yet alone the same factory.

The SQ and JV lines of Squier are supposedly up to par, or better, than MIA Fender of the same era.

Yes indeed. I just paid $600 for a VERY clean JV series P bass and it was worth every penny. I've owned many American Fender P's but the JV has a certain magic about it. The neck and fretboard are PERFECT and all but play themselves. The pups put out that PERFECT P sound as well. Fit, finish and overall build quality is second to none. It's a bass that I wouldn't part with at any price.
