Classic Stingray - Thoughts?

Guys - My local Guitar Center has a Classic Stingray in Vintage Burst for $1499. It has a chip (smallish) on the neck behind the 14th fret. The frets need a little love too. I told them gimme your best price. They said they could do $1,250. This is the one with the birdseye neck, the stringthrough with the dampners (ot whatever, the sponges in the bridge).

Well, you can get a brand new StingRay for around $1750. With repair costs you'd be nearing the price of a new bass. Your call though.

Seems like a good price. EBMM recently raised its prices so you are saving quite a bit.

I love mine. Personally I love the 2 band pre. Has best of old Stingrays but with upgrades like truss wheel in heel and 6 bolt neck. $1250 is a decent price if you like it.

No it's the "classic" series

Classic is like a reissue but with a few modern improvements. It's a newer bass, maybe 2010 or later.

So it depends on how much you like it and how well it plays/sounds. From GC it sounds like a pretty good deal.

I found the mutes to be a total PITA to raise and lower on mine. Just an FYI.

I have a Classic Ray with the roasted birdseye neck and it's an astounding bass. Is the Classic you're looking at used or is it marked down because it's a demo that got beat on? It's very rare for a new EBMM to need any fretwork in my experience. I bought mine used here in the classifieds and the fretwork is as close to perfection as I've ever seen.

I didn't but it. found more damage on the body and Guitar Center decided they had marked it down enough. So screw em.

Go back in a week with $1200 and ask for the manager. This tactic works, I've been able to get stuff for less once it sits around for a while.

Frets are remarkably sharp. Like a bad mexi-fender.

A used Classic just sold in the classifieds here for $900. Last year I passed on a Classic in the classifieds for not much more than that. So to me all those prices the OP is talking about sound a bit high. I know the two deals I just mentioned were below what they usually go for, but for $1100-1200 I'd expect a used Classic in impeccable condition.

Probably just fret sprout which may go away once more humidity is introduced.

I don't think it's a particularly great deal. It's a used bass for all intents and purposes, and you can find one a great condition here in the classifieds that is in better condition, plays perfectly, was well taken care of, etc.
