boutique basses actually make me laugh. I think most look ugly. Once you get too fancy it just becomes a joke to me. Nice wood and craftsmanship... but foolish.

I wouldn't be caught dead playing one live.

I prefer to the looks of rics and fenders.

I think Jerzy Drozd basses are amongst the most beautifull basses, specially the Signature, but maybe with a fretless fingerboard. And CB basses are very beautifull too.

I tend to like...

Many, but not all, Jazz type basses.
Ricks (esp fireglo and white with black pickguard and binding).
Many transparent dye finishes with nice grain or tastefully figured tops.
SR4s, but not too keen on SR5s lookswise.
Most of Rob Green's Status basses - except mine. Plays like a dream, looks pretty dull.
Good looking hardware - this includes chrome, black AND gold. I know gold hasn't been too fashionable of late round here, but some recent threads indicate it could be making a resurgence.

Am I the only person who thinks most boutique basses AREN'T classy? Not to rag on those who play them, but they seem more like a symbol of status, more than anything. At least in my twisted mind.

Fender Jazz or Precision. Both look their best (IMO) with Sunburst finish and white or tort p/g and rosewood board, or the "tuxedo" black body and white or white perloid p/g. No ashtrays unless it is a nicely worn in vintage bass, they look gaudy and out of place on a new looking bass

A lot of boutique basses, even the "tame" ones, look like whores. Sometimes I like that look and all, but still.
