Clean The Grill Cloth or Not ?

When I picked up my BT-15 someone had spray painted the cloth black. Knowing that it's a plastic materail I pulled out the baffel board (PITA) and took it to a car wash where I soaked it with paint stripper and let it sit for 2 minutes than I blasted it with the power washer. I repeated as nessary untill I was happy with the results.
It's the one on the left.

+1, grill is really tough stuff, I did the same on my SVT, paint stripper on the grill to remove the black spray paint and washed, but then cleaned off last few times with Brake/Carb cleaner (Carbon Tet) a few times, not sure about lighter colours though.

yeah but its a 66... if it was a 96 i would replace it. i guess its up to you. the problem if you take the cloth off is getting it back on, the edges fray and the weave pulls apart. i collect vintage stuff and suggest waiting for a hot dry sunny day. take just the baffle and attached cloth, put it face up on a flat surface. wet the cloth good with formula 409 cleaner, let it sit for a minute, and hose it off with a garden hose. do that one more time and the brown will just rinse away. pat it dry with a towel and stand it facing the sun to dry it out. only being wet for a few minutes the wood will not soak up much water and will be dry in 3 hours. the grill fibers are not porous and the grime is just on the surface. hey jimmy long time no see ! johnny a.

I had excellent luck while cleaning a grill cloth from a '75 SVT810 by using Resolve Pet Stain remover, a nylon bristled brush, and careful use of water/clean dampened cloths... It worked really well, and didn't damage anything... I had a jug leftover from when my GSD was a puppy...

+1, trust Billy, this stuff works!:hyper:

By the way, Greg, are you in Mass?

No, I live in the Puget Sound area. By, but not in, Seattle.

Started playing in '64 when the Beatles made their debut. Around here it was NW Rock and Roll
The Sonics
Tiny Tony and The Statics with Merilee
Paul Revere and The Raiders
The Wailers
Jimmy Hanna and The Dynamics
Don and The Goodtimes

etc etc etc

Yes. In the early days she wasn't "Rush" yet.
Then Tiny Tony disappeared and it was Merilee and the Turnabouts. Then it was just Merilee and she did her "Angel of the Morning" thing. and then the "big scandal" with Larry Lujack and they were gone.

The Statics were amazing

(She sure had a lot of groupies.)

i'll bet she did! anyway, i don't want to hijack the thread but i love scandals and i couldn't find anything online about it so if you get a chance in the near future, please pm me with the details.

It was really a travesty.

Larry Lujack and Pat Oday had really done a lot (promotion wise) for The Turnabouts and by that time Neil and Merilee had married. So for a Christmas present they bought (I think it was) Larry Lujack a nice TV. There was a big stink about it claiming "Payola" (I don't know by who though) and they pretty much were goners after that.

That's the story anyway.

wow, all that for a lousy tv? and a christmas present at that. that's just plain wrong. probably some nimrod at a competing station.

apologies for the hijacking everyone. but i had to know.

Nice, shot in the dark I guess. There are probably lots of Greg M's out there!:smug:

Welcome to TB! Good luck with the grill cloth, Bill's got yer back!

Put on new cloth. There's a few sources for the exact replacement.

I have never seen any of the reissue cloth that's exactly like the original fender cloth. the rectangles are larger on the new stuff, the weave is a little different, and it's a different color (and not due to aging).

as far as the ampeg cloth goes, tubesandmore.com has OEM ampeg cloth and it matches the blue/silver that ampeg is using on the VR and AV cabs exactly.
