clean untreated wood? and veneer Q

first off, i started a 6 string a few years ago, and i've only just gotten back into planning to finish.

but the neck is a bit dirty (maple neck), as though its been played with dirty hands, and its un treated, is there a way i can clean? or try sanding down a few layers?


and i also have a laminate question for the same project.

the body is has been complete, and i have seen a few 0.5mm thick or so wooden laminates i planned to veneer onto the body.

question: lets say (random choice of woods) i wanted a top spalted walnut veneer, and i placed another purpleheart veneer of same thickness under the walnut, would i get a pink accent line around the edges? is this thick enough to achieve the effect?



as i said the choice of woods were random, but i hope i was clear, and if anybody has any pictures of this that would be helpfull.

Sanding the neck will remove the grime. I'd start with the last grit used, e.g., 220-grit, and work my way up through the grits until the surface texture is acceptable, followed by a few coats of 1-pound cut de-waxed shallac to seal and protect the wood.

Purpleheart will oxidize to brown over time.

thanks! good news abut the sanding


and the purpleheart was a random wood, perhaps i should have said ebony, but it will still be fairly visable as an accent line?

i've loked at all my past notes i had written about 2 years ago, and it was a burled maple top with ebony accent line.

but i will get to work on the neck right away!

The visibility of the accent line will be a function of the contrast between it and the layers above and below it, and the angle at which the layers are trimmed at the periphery. If all three layers are sliced in a vertical line perpendicular to the top of your bass, their respective profiles will be subtle and relatively difficult to visualize. However, if the edge where the three layers meet were to be chamfered at 45-degrees, each of the layers would appear wider and easier to visualize.
