Double Bass Cleaning Brass (?)

This may be a weird question but does anyone know if the decorative plate under the tuning machines on an Engelhardt C1 is brass? I don't have any Brasso around so I'm looking for a homemade solution. I know, I could just go and buy some brass cleaner but it seems like a waste for such a small area

Don't use Brasso; it's abrasive. I'd just give the plate a wipe with a damp cloth and call the rest patina.
