I'm head over heels for my Squire Vintage Modified Precision V, I love the warm sound it gives straight out of the amp on a low volume. Although I find (and I suspect many squires are like this) that the DI signal into a recording program to be muddy and imprecise.

I know my amp isn't the problem it's a GK 500. Just wondering what do?? What's the best way to clean up the signal, is this an honest pick up and pot change?

Please share your wisdom!

Don't know if this is helpfull, but my Squier Affinity P-bass (4 stringer) was also warm sounding, with extra bass, but undefined and muddy. I installed SPB-1 and got much better definition and focus, great mids, much more harmonic content, some growl.

When you have quality signal, it is easy to make it warmer with older strings or flats, or tube-like preamp.

I believe that those Squier stock pickups are lacking, so my advice is to try other aftermarket models.

How strange to see this. I had an early 2000's Squier P/J that was nice but sounded only so, so, in a band setting but sounded awesome when recorded direct. By that i mean every nuance of my fingers came out, in a good way. I too had everything wide open.

That sounds like the way to go! I'm going to change the pots as well because they're obviously cheap. The tone pot has a undefined 4/10 flat setting towards the end of the tone off.

Thanks for your help :)
