It's a shame that they buried his basslines when recording, even up to the moment that he himself was buried...
Glad to see so much appreciation for Cliff !!
But, I have to disagree w/ MysticBoo here. I don't and never have thought that Cliff was buried in the mix. It's easy for bassist to think that the bass should be louder in the mix. But, we've got to remember that our audiences are, for the most part, not bassists or musicians. So, when mixing a song, you have to realize what most listeners focus on, THE SONG as a whole. The bass must support the song. Cliff knew this, and he fulfilled his role in the band wonderfully!
BTW, if you wanna hear bass that's buried, listen to And Justice For All ! Newsted should've quit the band then....he can't be heard on any track!
+1... gotta wonder what motivated the studio staff to turn the bass into non-musical quiet "booms"...

But seriously poor Jason... I still hate him though because he played with a pick on orion solo/other songs.
+1 Worst production ever! Well maybe not ever but it was horrible. sounded like they mixed it and then ran the whole thing through a compressor.BTW, if you wanna hear bass that's buried, listen to And Justice For All ! Newsted should've quit the band then....he can't be heard on any track!
Ok, I'm not trying to be an elitist here but, technically your fingers are "better"... With your fingers you have a large variety of things you can do, slapping, keyboarding, etc etc. With pic you are limited to just strumming or throwing away/trying to hold your pick in an awkward way to do anything else... What do you guys think?

IMO, slap techniques are in a league of their own, separate from more traditional fingerstyle techniques. As for picks... they offer a new range of techniques that you can't pull off with just your fingers. To think that you're limited to strumming shows that you haven't really spent much time with a pick to see what it can do.
well i do both.for different reasons.there are things fingers are better for and there are things pick are better for.i don't slap 'cause i think it sound cheesey.
he was an excellent bassist, but i don't consider his sound exceptional.
