Cliff Burton?

This discussion doesn't lead anywhere. Everytime someone gives his/her opinion, somebody else states that it's total gibberish, and it goes on and on and on. How childish, would you even try to have a decent and formal discussion, respecting others opinions???

That said, Jason Newstead sucks, and Cliff Burton is the KING!!!!

So you're saying that Cliff is alive somewhere eh? Or is it that he WAS the king.
C'mon Past and present tense is not that hard to sort out.

And why trash Newsted? (Yes, no a in the last name) What does that bring beyond someone telling you that you suck and Jason was great? Try a little tact.

Also, look in the mirror before you judge people to be childish. Your judgement reflects back onto yourself.

Sorry if I offended anyone, that really wasn't my point. Yes, it was a joke and I thought that everyone would get it because I contradicted myself so clearly. I hope anyone didn't get too pissed. :)

Listen to some of the bass work on Kill 'Em All and see how Cliff was able to craft some very good basslines in a genre that has never been known for a need for a great bassist. Like Geezer Butler before him, Cliff was a great bassist in a ground breaking and VERY influential band. The very fact that we still have the "Cliff" debate 20 YEARS after he died is a testimony of just how influential he was. He brought a unique sound to metal with counter melodies, dissonant chords that highlighted what the guitarists were doing not to mention a unique image. Red hair flowing, head banging slowly, bell bottoms, he did what was not expected and that's why, love him or hate him, he is underrated to this day. To many of us, he is the reason we picked up a bass in the first place! Rest In Piece Cliff..Cliff 'Em All!!!!!

The sound DID change between Master Of Puppets and Justice. I've heard it said that Jason was the catalyst for this change:eyebrow: It is very common knowledge that Jason had VERY little input on that album. I've read that his parts were WRITTEN down with specific instructions on how to play by James. Then the bass was "poorly mixed" so it comes out as a roar. I personally think this is the best Metallica album. That roar to me, fit the whole dark tone and feel of the album. But, before that album came out, we got Garage Days and we heard a "back to basics" metal album and we get to hear Jason on some NWOBHM classics from Diamonhead - Am I Evil? and who can forget Crash Course In Brain Surgury..Very tasty straight ahead -kick in your teeth metal bass- a good primer for anyone wanting to see how to lay down a tight groove.

I know a lot of people don't have much love for Cliff. But I do. Cliff is actually the reason I started playing. And I am not some Metallica nut, I actually can't stand most of Metallica's stuff. But Cliff really impressed me. Pulling Teeth may not be the masterpiece it used to be by today's standards, but, since Cliff's death I think the role of the bass player has become much more prevelent in a lot of kinds of music. Not like there were not great bassist before, but, I think by the standards of Cliff's day (and the standards of the thrash genre) he was a great player.

In my opinion, I don't think its... "fair" to compare Cliff and Jason in any way. One is always going to come out on top for some silly reason i.e.: 'Ja$0n Uzd PixXxorz, CliFf Pwnz joo NooBz!' or something like that. Think about it, compair Metallica with Jason and with Cliff to each other, they're both completely different. When Jason joined we saw a massive change in the style of music, it wasn't really that 'Thrash' anymore. It's like apples and oranges. One thing we can all agree on is that Jason did a fine job of playing every song that Cliff wrote, and Cliff could do an equally fine job playing everything from ...And Justice onwards.
