This is what I say in every Cliff Thread. I personally love Cliff Burton hes a great influence on my playing but he didnt have time to become a better bassist then he was.Was he the greatest? No (Although I do worship this man) there are better bassists then him but he was great and its a real shame he didnt get to become better then he was because he would have turned out really really great.

+1 Exactly - he was only 24 when he died... still had a lot of potential. who knows?

I view cliff like this:-

1) Composer
2) Performer
3) Bassist

No too say his bass playing is in any way bad, but could you have written "Pulling teeth", and then played it whilst headbanging that wildly???.

Before all the haters come out, no I dont consider "pulling teeth" to be the best thing ever written....but having learnt it fully, you don't just come up with something like that on the fly, and to his (and metallica's) credit, to dedicate an entire album track to the dreaded bass solo took some huge......

"Cliff didn't write Pulling Teeth all by himself, apparently McGovney was playing most of it before he left and Cliff joined up"

Sorry, but where did you get that information???. By all accounts McGoveny didnt even record anything, he played live but on the "no life til leather" demo that was James on bass. Do some research, "pulling teeth" has nothing to do with McGoveny!

Ok, so you're the all-seeing, all-knowing world's authority on Metallica and everything regarding them, are you? Thank God we found you!

Can't be too knowledgeable though, you can't even spell McGovney's surname right...

FYI, I remember reading, either online or elsewhere, that McGovney had quite a bit of Pulling Teeth together before Cliff joined, and Cliff took that, embellished and built upon that, it and made it into Pulling Teeth. Note that NOWHERE did I say that McGovney recorded either that track or anything else with Metallica, neither did I say that Cliff Burton wasn't soloing before he joined Metallica, because history shows that he was taking solo spots with Trauma.

Furthermore, your response suggests that you're one of those people who is deeply offended by anyone who fails to laud Cliff Burton as the best bassist of all time, never mind in metal, and a bona fide musical genius to boot. And my guess is that you're also one of these guys who think that Mechanix and When are songs that Dave Mustaine stole from Metallica, that the Black Album sucked and Metallica sold out in making it, and that Bob Rock is the devil incarnate, am I right?

Cliff Burton is the reason I started playing bass, I love Cliff with a passion in my heart, sad he died before I ever was alive. He was a great bass player, probably the greatest bass player in the thrash metal genre of all time. He reminds me a lot of Randy Rhoads, he died so young, and had so much going for him. If he was still alive we might be looking at the best Metal player of all time. I still look at him as a personal favorite, and the reason I picked up bass. He is not the greatest, but he was a damn amazing player.

McGovney wasn't playing 'Anesthesia', that's all Cliff. McGovney does play bass on the ten tracks of "No Life Til Leather" demo I had growing up. He used a pick and a Ric. Cool sound. Cliff was just far more unique and creative. Mustaine wrote riffs all the way through "Master" along with Cliff. Ever notice that the first three LPs came out each successive year? It sucks to me what Metallica became after Cliff. "Justice" is drum riffs pieced together with all these awkward transitions and you cannot even hear the bass. Hell, they even used Cliff's riffs for "To Live is To Die". James and Lars are some lucky dudes to have played with Burton and Mustaine. Trujillo is a cool guy, as was Newsted. The other three are annoying whining media whores. Well, throw Mustaine into that one.

I kinda find it funny how there are people in this thread that are constantly saying to give respect to this guy, or that there isn't enough respect for him, when I've seen nothing but respect here, even from those who admit to not actually liking him. It's as if the fans just want to argue with people and are just trying to lure someone in.

Thats ********, McGovney could barely play the instrument :rollno:

Proof of that? Anyone?

Or does it mean that, now that a few of you are voicing your belief that Cliff Burton wrote all of Pulling Teeth without any reference to, or use of ideas or material from another source automatically write it into the history books as indeniable fact?

And Rudreax is spot on:

Anyone saying anything even remotely disparaging about Cliff Burton is automatically evil, and making up lies, eh chaps?

Well are you not doing the same thing? You cited no proof that McGovney had wrote it other then-

I remember reading, either online or elsewhere,

Even though James Hetfield has said the first time he and Lars saw Cliff he was playing Anesthesia. You're the one disputing Cliff wrote it so its up to you to present a credible source.

To say that Cliff didnt write pulling teeth is the same as saying someone else wrote most Portrait of Tracy or Show of Hands and Jaco and Wooten just "took it and embellished upon it" Outrageous claims need sources.

No, I said I remembered reading it somewhere.

No, he didn't. James said he and Lars heard someone soloing, and he and Lars were looking for a guitarist. They also said that Cliff was doing crazy stuff like using a beer glass or bottle as a slide, but I don't remember hearing any of that stuff in Pulling Teeth.

Jaco didn't write Portrait Of Tracy as you know it. People who were connected with the recording of Jaco's first album (such as Bobby Colomby), said that Jaco played the phrases that you hear on P.O.T, but the song was later edited together into what appears on the album, and this appears to be backed up by an early demo of P.O.T which has circulated for a while.

no, you can hate on cliff all you want, but at least get your facts straight. your "claim" is borderline trolling IMO. i'll say it again (i think for the third time this thread)

pulling teeth was cliffs own work.

And like you, I'll repeat myself again; just because you say it is so, doesn't make it so. It's funny that, because someone has a dissenting opinion to your own, it automatically makes them a troll, eh? Perhaps you need to look up the word "forum" in the dictionary, and question whether you think you can adhere to that definition, or whether the moderators of TB should follow your lead, and crack down on individual thought and forming of opinions. Regardless, I'm done with this.

it IS so, not because i say so, but because its a proven fact. I cant wait for the guy who actually hung with cliff in the early days to chime in and put you in your place. but while we're waiting:

burton wrote it.

mcgovney didnt.
