My 1972 all original 1972 Jazz in OLYMPIC WHITE -aged yellow tint, maple neck with black blocks in very good 7 out of 10 condition. Missing only the covers as they are stashed away in a city far from me now.

TRADE 1972 Jazz for an LM5 Deluxe Alleva Coppolla evenly ?

I know this might be a stretch a la apples/oranges direction-- BUT I would really appreciate any comments that you fine ALLEVA enthusiasts could offer on the feasability of such a trade. Is it fair? Is it uneven ? For who ? etc etc.

My buddy just bought one for 3k but i have seen them for as high as 5-6k at shows,, Vintage stuff is down now.. but it will go up again...

I dabble with Chromes.. 45-100... Dont like the "B" string though.. so i use a RW "B". I like their tension..

Never played the TI.. just hate to part with that amount of money for a set of strings.. I feel like Im being Held up at gunpoint...

So TI &/or Labella make 5 string sets of flats??? Must check out some online stores. Any recommendations here???

Bass7755- Dan - thanx for the kind words. It's a beautiful thing. I like the fact that it doesn't LOOK like a boutique bass, but AFAIK it WORKS better'n ANY bass I've tried B4- 'boutique' or production line. The ONLY one that came CLOSE was my old Stingray 5 (which I Shouldn't've sold :-( but- them's the breaks)
As I mentioned I've been using it 90% at least in PASSIVE mode. Even last nite's(Sun) jazz/blues gig, I took it to. I USUALLY use my Precision with flats, but wanted to try the AC EUT5 in that scenario.
Of course it SHONE. But with the fairly new roundwounds it had a bit much 'ring' & sustain.

So I'd LOVE to get a set of decent flats- probly a fairly light guage, as the flats I've liked best so far have been D'addario Chromes 40-95.

But I've never tried TI flats- but have heard nothing but great things about them.
I've only tried REAL thick Labella flats- too thick a guage for me- so they didn't 'click' with me. I DID try a set of Labella TAPEWOUNDS on my P bass- & I like them a lot.

So If i could get a set of TI's or the like in a 40-95 & a -120 'B' string or similar I'd love to give this A TRY with the AC EUT5

IMO the values are fairly close today BUT the all original black block 72 will absolutely keep appreciating and be worth allot more in the coming years...

Well me personally, I'm not such a fan of 70's Fenders let alone jazz basses but I feel like the value may not increase so much without the original covers & case. I also LOVE Pete's LM5 so I think I'd do it.

I'd do that deal in about 2 seconds. I'm old enough to remember 72 J basses

Yes, per the comment above, if you were going to put that Fender in the closet for another 20 years and then sell it, it would make sense to keep it. If you are going to gig it... forget about it

Yeah I was struggling with the fact that the 72 all original ( I do have the original case with the bass as well as the original tag !-- and the covers are at my brothers place on the east Coast ) will keep appreciating.

And true they are both the AC 5 and the 72 Jazz today about on par as to their respective value.

Yeah, I generally agree with most others here too. From a purely monetary value, given it's not as particularly valuable as some can get (as Kirk mentions), the match-up should be about right. So it depends on what your goal is. If you're looking for an investment, keep the Fender. If you're looking for a gig machine and you can't afford to keep the Fender as an investment, and (again) as long as the valuation is close, do the trade. I would advise you to keep that Fender if at all possible tho... just buy the AC!!!

You go the extra mile with amps and really scientifically break down sound timbres, a la body and fingerboard woods, electronics, feel, weight---colour ????? etc etc.

Your LM5 Gold knocks me out of the ring !
The LG5 is cool (old school vibe-with an edge) too.

Thanks! To be a little more serious, a 70's Fender J sounds like a 70's Fender J (although, of course, there is lots of variance across individual instruments) and an A-C LM sounds like an A-C with a strong nod to those mid/late 70's Fenders.

My gold LM is very lightweight, and it just sounds wonderful to me (I believe Marcus Miller's Fender is very lightweight from what I've been told, and it has that vibe to it... not really that old school, boat anchor ganky thing, but deep bass, nice grind, and nice treble extension). The current LM's are quite a bit heavier (mine is well under 9 pounds, and the new ones are pushing 11 or 12 pounds). I hated those heavy Fenders, and my guess is I would not dig the current, heavy LM's that much.

However, if the weight doesn't bother you, the preamp, the playability, the pickups...everything about the LM's (at least the original New York models) is just perfect for me... that 70's vibe and tone in a relatively lightweight package. Any difference in tone between the original is in a positive direction for me personally.

The newer, heavier LM's with the larger body would not be my thing (at least the 5 strings). That doesn't mean they aren't killer (I'll get to play one soon when my buddy Vision's arrives later this summer). However, they are quite different from the LM I have and love.

I think this is apples to oranges, and here's why:

Are you looking for a killer bass, or for a vintage collector's item? I know about the buzz behind an original 70's Jazz, but to me, I'd rather have a new, custom bass that's built with the kind of attention that a Jimmy Coppolo, Carey Nordstrand, Roger Sadowsky, or similar would give. That said, these boutique basses aren't going to appreciate in value the way a vintage instrument will.

So: do you want a bass that plays and sounds amazing, and most of all, comes with the kind of support that a custom/boutique builder provides? If so, get the Alleva. If you want a collector's item to show off and keep as a living piece of history, keep the 70's Jazz.

One caveat I'd offer on this...

Jimmy's done it before (your bass), I'm sure he could do it again. It may not be what he recommends, but ultimately, he's still got the old body template, and I would be fairly surprised if he would literally refuse a sale to avoid duplicating your bass.

Back when I was considering getting an LM myself, that was gonna' be my approach, and I just can't imagine Jimmy playing hardball on this if I was insistent. I could be wrong, but it would surprise me. It would be a "custom" tho, at this point.

And before anyone asks, I chose to go with a different brand, not because I was the least bit unhappy with what Jimmy is capable of, but rather, just because I wanted to spread my collection out a little bit on this one.

I LOVE my LG. LOVE IT.

+1...exactly. Mine will be a hybrid between the 2 versions. Before it went into the build process Jimmy called me and asked if this was okay with me - it should get me my bass a little faster because he already had that body rough cut verses me waiting for him to do another batch of the new bodies. I'm also hoping that mine will be a little lighter than the new specs which I've heard are more in the 11 lb+ range. I'm not too picky on weight specs, but once it gets over 11 lbs I really start to notice it.

i had a 74 J back in the day. it weighed just under 14lbs IIRC, and surely didn't have the build quality of playability of my LG5.
