Club Alleva-Coppolo (Part 14)

I agree with Kirk, ya go figure right?

But I also see Vic's, Ken's, Peter's and others points... And I understand. I don't think building basses for NAMM is the prime reason, if you all notice this all happened late last year and into this year. Jimmy is just trying to find his swing with the bigger demand. Trying to find ways to make more instruments at the same quality level and keep up with the increased orders, hence the CNC and etc.

I think customers in all businesses will feel it a bit when a company tries to adjust some of it's methods, some more than others especially with a 1 man show like Alleva-Coppolo.

Vic sees it as being short-sighted but I see it the opposite as the pains now will pay off in the long run when production is running on all cylinders and the wait times drop.

And I don't speak for Jimmy, but if I was him I would be thinking, "So what if I piss off a few guys on TalkBass, I'm looking at the future." Besides, pissing people off on this site isn't too hard to do... I often wonder how many of the 100+ orders are actually from TB members, I bet not that many.

Everyone loves to blame NAMM and BPLive and other shows for the wait time, but the huge inflow of cash from these shows helps his business which should help down the line.

So to Kirk's point, yes Jimmy just needs some breathing room.

And to Peter's point regarding quoted delivery times, I think Jimmy is now quotting 14 months... I am confident everything will get ironed out soon and he will meet that or sooner.

Like i said Jimmy is an Artist. And artists need time to do their thing...Without the stress and BS or whimpering from people. regardless..! The only thing an artist cares about is the art , everything else fall sin after that.. regardless.

Perhaps he should stop taking orders completely and just build basses to stock. Then if someone wants one they just get what is on the site. That would get rid of the stress on him from people here... and please everyone so there is no wait time.. Just get them as they come.
Im think that is a great idea for an artist builder like him.. And i would suggest that is what he should do.

Just my opinion.

Good idea.

My opinion is that when an Artist, a Priest or a plumber make a deal with me I expect them to honour it to the very best of their ability.

I have had previous difficult dealings ordering basses ( not AC s)and I feel quite strongly that once an Artist also becomes a Businessman the rules apply to both sides.

I know that he is doing his best .. it is in his DNA... So to insinuate that he is not is just plain silly.

Plain silly? OK.

Maybe I'm just someone who is not easily impressed by Artistry or ego compared to straightforward delivery on a promise?

I stress again I have no issue with Jimmy but I do object in principle to you using phrases like BS and whimpering to describe reaction by people who perhaps feel let down during what is actually a business transaction.

IIRC.... another major brand (from NYC) went through similar issues with delays and people just kept ordering and ordering and ordering.... unless he goes all Ken Bebensee (sp?) I think he should do just fine.

Of course this is easy for me to say as I don't have one on order, but I do know the let down of being told that NAMM instruments are a priority and my instrument is getting pushed to the back burner, but in the grand scheme of things it is all for the good... hopefully.

**Edit- As long as quality does not suffer, then delays in build times should be somewhat okay. Nothing like waiting an extra 6 months for your bass only to find out the neck pocket is messed up or the pickup routes are jagged...

I don't know this for a fact, but I don't think there are very many basses that are actually delayed. Like Yohann mentioned, this is an issue that affected basses that were ordered during maybe a 4-6 month window in 2009. Jimmy's wait time went from 5-6 months up to 12-14 months due to alot of circumstances. As far as I know, he's been rightly quoting 12-14 months as a wait time since around a year ago. So for those of us that ordered our basses in the summer and fall of 2009, we ended up being quoted 6 months or so which likely on basses delivered around 12-14 months. But since Jimmy was quick to adjust his quoted wait time I don't think it's a big issue. It's not like a Fodera situation where for years they were quoting a 1 year wait which ended up being a 2-3 year wait to the point that people that ordered knew to double the quoted wait time. (Fodera definitely seems to have that on track now, which is great!)

So in the big scheme of things this shouldn't be more than a minor bump in the road for Jimmy. I'm looking forward to getting what I know will be an absolutely killer bass!!!! :bassist:

Reality catching up with hype?
I honestly don't know how your post relates to current discussion...
Yeah, to me, it's only "hype" if its value comes solely from advocacy, and the product doesn't hold up in reality, but I don't think that applies here. To be fair, I have personal verification in my LG that Jimmy is absolutely capable of backing up all the gushing when everything goes as it should.

Reality catching up with hype?

Nope. These basses are still IMO among the best in the business. He is having some growing pains, which is part of a small business growing a bit too rapidly. I'm sure he will right the ship there eventually.

Why would you say 'hype'... never did get that. Many of us have put clips up, and these basses have gotten phenominal reviews at tons of GTG's. Lots of pictures, and quite honest reviews on these threads.... the good and the bad.

I'm coming up on my 2 year anniversary with my RA-5 in
3 weeks. It's been pretty much the only bass I use
(except for my KBP5). I still love this bass as much as
the day it arrived. :smug: I'm thinking about adding
a 60's Jazz and Jimmy is only one of 2 builders on my list
at this time. I might call him to see if he has any NAMM
basses available I might be interested in. All of my
Coppolo's have been NAMM or BPL basses. :hmm::)

I don't pretend to know the facts of it, but agreed with the sentiment.

Well stated

Agreed to all comments...I'm a painting artist, musician and business person myself, I knew and understand all those points that bros here stated.

I love jimmy's basses and impressed by his craftsmanship, this is no doubt his basses is one of the best in the industry nowadays for the vintage style instruments, and I truly understand how an artist work on their piece in terms of how their time/effort spent either.

I just wanna state for healthy and growing small business, as long as he can state a clear build time, I believe people will fine and set with this since I think the people who spend their hard earn money /time of waiting is definitely know what they are looking for and receive. :scowl:right?

Better communication and clear stated production lead time is pretty much can solve some "problems" for sure....isn't it? :D

My 0.000002 cents....

To be fair Jimmy didn't over promise me anything when I placed my order. He told me to expect it around Christmas next year which would put it around the 14 month period.

So for what its worth he's giving it straight.
