I've been using the Alleva KPB4 most of the time

different... But it slots in a heavy mix better than any of them,,, Most of the stuff is nashville or TX guitar oriented stuff. Lots of guitars... It slots in very well,, Where my sadowsky always became murky in that mix.. My sadowsky was a great bass .. just not good for what i wanted it to do in the situations i am in.

I just received a AC LG5 Classic Supreme which has a Jimmywood fingerboard. I browsed through all the posts here at Tb but it is still nebulous to me what it really means. What I understood is:
1) Jimmywood seems to be a blend of several South American Rosewoods, coming from a special wood lumber of one of Jimmys wood suppliers. It is not a common wood name and the wood has some very special attributes close to DN.
2) Someone mentioned Jimmywood is now called CNL
3) Jimmywood has been sold with an upcharge applied to all models, even LG Standards with Poly, same with CNL
What I do not understand: What qualifies a Supreme if the CNL board could be ordered as an upgrade to a Classic or even Standard model ? I formerly believed that the most unique feature of a Supreme is the DN board. Even that does not seem to be true. Bass SD sells both Supremes and Poly finished ACs with CNL boards.
Anyone out there who could put some lights on this ?

I've come across the same thing and bought an AC with this configuration and naming in the past.
CNL is Caesar Negro Lignum (aka Jimmywood) which is a Brazilian Rosewood Hybrid.
And yes, I'm in the same school of a thought that a true CS has a DN board and Nitro Laquer Finish.
If you send a message to Jimmy with the serial number, he will confirm the model.

Okay, so the nomenclature on the model has gotten hazed up a bit, but I'll try to clear things up:
An LG Standard is a '60s style J with a preamp: that's an alder body, '60s pickup positioning, and a rosewood fingerboard.
The same bass with a nitro lacquer finish would be called an LG Classic due to the "classic" old school finish.
The original bass would be called an LG Supreme with an upgraded rosewood fingerboard originally, but people got too confused, so Jimmy et al decided to just call that an upgraded LG. This could be any kind of upgraded rosewood fingerboard, but as Dalbergia nigra (Brazilian) and Dalbergia whateveritisia (Jimmywood/CNL--Caesar nigra lignum, or "black Caesar wood") are increasingly rare, they end up usually going on basses with nitro lacquer. I think this is the main confusion.
A Classic Supreme then has a DN or CNL fingerboard and nitro, just like most would expect, though many of Jimmy's earlier admirers may automatically think DN for the board because that was originally the only upgraded rosewood.
A lot of the time it's simply easier to call out upgrade features "a la carte" on a base LG name because there's no ambiguity on what features are upgraded, but it leaves people more confused about the official names of models. The most significant upgrades in terms of cost though are still the rosewood on the neck and nitro lacquer (blocks/binding, special paint like sparkles or flip-flops also cost extra but it's a smaller upgrade).
*NOTE: Another potentially confusing thing is that you'll occasionally see a bass called an LE or LG(4or 5) LE. These are typically built off an LG base spec but with a different wood or something that Jimmy has a small stock of (like a Spanish cedar body). Still, you often see these simply called LGs, but with that feature pointed out.
Whew! Hope that helps in making things less confusing rather than more confusing!

Thanks George and Chris for clarification ! Indeed my main confusion came from the statements written in the neck pocket of my bass, that it is a Supreme with Jimmywood. But neither Jimmywood nor CNL is listed in the Alleva site as "special rosewood" - so I had some concerns whether this is legit.
And nobody can really confirm what it is (Dalbergia ?) besides Jimmy himself I believe.
The bass turns out to be a very good LG. Although I feel a little bit more sparkle in the sound and less "buttery" low mids.

Yeah, his website isn't updated often (for good reason!), but the rosewoods you'll see on Classic Supremes are Brazilian and CNL (aka: Jimmywood). I think I may even prefer CNL generally speaking personally because of that little extra sparkle that some report getting, though D. nigra has the cool factor--especially now that the stuff generally is reclaimed and thus has two stories! What does your LG look like? I can never get enough!
I do believe Dalbergia Nigra is an upcharge from CNL even though they are both CS.

Oh man that's a beautiful bass! Sorry to see you had to part with it. A friend of mine had an LG5 Classic Supreme with nitro finish and Dalbergia Nigra in Oly White just like yours, which he parted with a long long time ago. His bass was the sole reason why I picked mine up years back. Still in love with my bass to this day, and I still don't have any desires for any basses from any other builders
. And a question to all other Alleva owners who've owned their basses for a long time (5+ years). Have you guys found that you've needed to get a setup on your necks at all during ownership? I'm wondering if I'm due for one, or if it's bad at all for the bass that I haven't taken it in for a setup ever. The last time my LG5 was looked over was when I took it back to Jimmy to fix slight fret buzzing in the upper registers after having purchased it from a fellow TBer. If memory serves me right, I think that was almost 8 years ago in the same year that I took ownership of the LG5.
Also, my LG5 will be going back into active duty soon, and will be putting on new strings (since the current set is at least 3 years old); could/would the variance in tautness of the old to new strings stress the neck
? I'm slightly regretting having kept such old strings on the bass for so long.Any insight would be much appreciated.

I believe no matter how good is the material used, craftsmanship is. A bass still need to do some seasonal setup. Not a big deal tho

I've had my EUT5 for. .. oooh ... I dunno. . 8 yrs now? I'd have to check for exact dates. I've only ever had to do minor tweaks to the set up.
The climate here is cool to cold winter regular sub 10°C days...-2 to 5°C nights & wet.
Summer can be 35°C or 17°C days & dry.
But my AC seems as solid as my Stingray5.

Ooh got it!! Thanks guys. My LG5 is the only bass I've kept around for this long, so wasn't sure 
. I kind of assumed I had to get a setup only if any kind of buzzing in the frets formed. And since that hasn't happened ever since Jimmy tweaked it a bit, I just never gave it a thought.
Maybe it just shows how amazing my LG5 is

My LG5 is very steady.. I rarely tweak the neck .. And i play with low action too.. I often tune down 1/2 from day to day ,, depending on who i am gigging with.. my LG5 as well as my Kbp4...
