Ken, I'd like to suggest DR Lo-Riders. I've got 'em on my Pedulla 4-banger and I think they may be what you're looking for. Very classic/traditional old-school sound. Here's the description from the DR web site:

"LO-RIDER nickel-plated bass strings are based upon hexagonal cores, wound with nickel-plated steel, specifically designed for a softer feel and a traditional warm nickel sound. These bass strings are even, long-lasting, and loud with a mid-range growl. An excellent string for fretless basses... LO-RIDERS love to Funk!"

+1 to experimenting with DR Suns and Lows.............Best nickels out there.......I had the A-c nickels on my LG for a long time........I kinda like the dead string sound, but seeing how I need to slap with this thing too, they weren't as good as the DRS I use....they seemed to kinda die faster than the DRs.........

Maybe, but do try the D's. I agree those are some really great Nickels. I'm not much into the Nickels myself, but of the ones I've tried, IMHO those are among the top of the heap. Plus they're cheap and easy to find. I've also tried LoRider Nickels and DR Sunbeams, also great, but I didn't think they were any better, and they're more expensive.

On the tone diff between your LM and LG, wow... I wonder if mine will be that different from the LG and LM I had. I'd like to think the tone on mine will be similar to Tony's killer orange bass. Is the DN board noted for a particularly bright tone? I was thinking not.

There is NOTHING bright about the tone I get from my LG.....it's about as dark and warm as any rosewood gets IME...... I really find a similarity to the sound that came out of Jaco's old Fender and my bass......I AM NOT saying that we play/sound alike......but the tone is there..........

The D'addario's that came on my RA-5 sound pretty good but
I'm probably going to replace them with a set of Subeams.

I'm a firm believer that we are all hearing differences in particular pieces of wood versus the DN being 'darker' or the Indian being 'brighter', etc., etc. I never did buy into any of that stuff quite frankly, and have never heard two pieces of any wood sound the same.

I'm definitely MUCH more of an LM guy than an LG guy, but man, this bass sounds and feels 40 years old. What is not to like about that! Put another way, the LM really does sound like a nice, moderate weight late 70's Fender.... grindy, the upper mid bump, and a tight low end that has some growl and aggression all the way down to the B string. It really does sound like some of those old slap clips from the early 80's that you find on YouTube. It's not that 'Marcus Miller J on steroids' thing, it's just passive 70's J bliss. That is TOTALLY the sound I dig, and I continue to be thrilled that I finally found that tone in a 5 string that has on-board tone controls. My LG is similarly VERY true to that warm, lightweight, fat middle 60's Fender J tone. This bass sounds and just as importantly 'feels' like one of those mid 60's Fenders that I've played, again in a 5 string active package. The LG will definitely not take the place of the LM... I didn't think it would. But man, for my more jazz oriented gigs that I do on electric, this thing is going to be WONDERFUL!

I love DR strings in general, so will also give these a try! Thanks for all the ideas guys! This is the first bass I think I've ever owned that is really calling for nickels to me. I totally love stainless steel roundwounds, and have been using one variety or the other since the mid 70's. And again, I can't imagine anything sounding better on my LM than the Hi Beams... just PERFECT!

However, putting stainless steel roundwounds on this bass seems similar to putting stainless steel roundwounds on a vintage 66 Fender.... it just doesn't seem right!

I'm going to start out with a set of DR Lo Rider Nickels 45-125. I really liked the 'traditional' feel of the Lo Rider steel strings, and had them on my passive Lakland DJ when I was looking for that more traditional hex core, tighter, feel. So, I'll start there and see what's what!

Edit: One more comment... it's not that this LG doesn't have plenty of sizzle with the Hi Beams on it. It's just that the upper mids and treble of this LG combined with very bright SS strings is not 'pleasant' to my ear like it is with the LM. That combination sounds to me like you are trying to force something out of this bass that just isn't meant to be. This bass' strength is in the mid mids and bass and lower mids, and sounds much better with the passive tone control engaged about 1/2 way to me (which is why I think the nickels will be perfect for this bass). I run my LM with the passive tone control pretty much out of the circuit with the Hi Beams, and it just kills.. upper mid grind for days!

For sure, but there are certainly repeatable trends in tonewood/build combinations that can be categorized.
