I first found out about Cliff in the www.musicplayer.com forum where I normally lurk. I did join Talkbass a while back but didn't regularly post.
One thing that I find amazing about my ball bass is that I can actually play the Emin chord E (E-string) D (D-string) and G (G-string) on the 24th fret. I've not been able to do that on any other bass I've played. Plus CB's basses are all drop dead gorgeous.
Am I number #19?

Every once in a while I like to look at this thread to see the new Cliff's creations for TB members and I remind when I ordered mine ... not many CB basses around here at that time! Now finally it seems that many people appreciate Cliff's work and dig his basses. I'm very happy for him and for all of you CB's owners out there!
Yeah, it sounds like he's really catching on. I'm trying to order a few before he gets too busy and raises his rates.
Cliff has increased the rates but it's still too low. I told him as much!
I'm sure that other string must be around somewhere!

I love the top on your bass. It really turned out even nicer than I thought it would.
I can't wait to see the new batch complete, and then see what is in store for the next group! I've had my first CB for over a year now, and I still can't put it down!!!!

As for tops - you never really know until that finish line what the bass will actually look like. That's all part of the risk/fun of a custom build.
I have to say that a few folk thought I was nuts - but I have no regrets. What amazes me is that every single note on the fretboard plays without buzzing. A lot of 24 fret basses I have tried work in one octave and not the other.
My spec is:
Ball Bass
Maple top
Walnut body wood
Wenge/Maple neck - 34" scale
Honduran Rosewood fingerboard
Audere pre-amp: Vol/Blend/Z-switch/Treble/Mids/Bass
Nordstrand big singles pickups
Hipshot bridge and ultralight tuners
DR strings
I'm ashamed to say that I'm not sure what the fret material is. Cliff do you use stainless steel these days? I know it's hard; with my fretless I'm used to holding the neck by the body and letting it slip through my hands till I'm at the headstock. I did this ONCE with the CB bass and nearly ripped my skin to shreads. "Ahhhh" I said "This isn't a fretless."
This foolishness is due to the fact I've been playing fretless exclusively for about 5 years and the CB Bass was all about getting back into frets. My 1976 P-bass doesn't really do anything for me anymore.

I haven't tried the Aguilar pre-amps and so my views are restricted to Audere. Nevertheless I have installed an Audere in my highly modified Jaco Jazz bass. I really like the control that the preamp gives with the volume (ie not all in last turn) the blend. I much prefer vol/blend to vol/vol and the very useable range the EQ gives.
I'm one of those guys that likes to set-up my amp as flat as possible and do any adjustments with my hands/onboard EQ. With the Jaco the Audere works really well and I use mostly the bridge PU and adjust the tone mostly with the bass EQ. I'm less of a fan of the neck PU sound on the Jazz. On the CB Bass it's not that dissimilar although I dig the tone of both PUs. My favourite setting is 70% bridge PU and then playing with the bass EQ. Mids and treble seem just dandy to me. The bass EQ goes all the way from diddly to that overblown bass tone that's quite effective occasionally.

Since my fingerboard is getting polyester coated, I have another 3-4 weeks to wait. Kinda wishing I went with the acrylized bird's eye maple so I'd have it now, but I'm gonna assume the coating will make it sound great.
