I have a Hammon Dark Star, DS-3,that came out of a Lakland 44-64 P-bass. The pickup has the letter "S" on each of the bar magnets, I am not sure what that means? I am trying to sell it and the buyer has some questions about this "S" and possible polarity issues.I posted in "Pickups/Electronics" forum, but I wanted to run it buy the Dark Star folks....thanks.

Let's get this thread cooking again, Darkstars are the best pups i've ever heard!

I'm still new enough to bass I don't know enough to tell great pups from mediocre ones, but one thing I can say for sure: Darkstars are the best looking pups I've ever seen.

There aren't a ton of Darkstar samples to be found on YouTube, but I enjoyed this one in particular. That is some seriously sexy tone. I'm really thinking I need a Darkstar in my next bass build.

The double cutaway bass on the left has a Darkstar in it.

I originally put a Peavey T-40 pickup in this bass, but later swapped it out for Darkstar. I wasn't overly thrilled with the tone until I put a set of flatwounds on it. Made all the difference in the world. I was playing the bass at a gig last month and the next day I took the bass out of it's bag & saw that the pickup itself had come loose from the chrome surround and dropped into the cavity; apparently the surround is epoxied to the top of the pickup. Not wanting to take a chance with epoxy, I decided to make a swamp ash plate to match the body. I found out that with a little modification a standard guitar humbucker pickup ring could be made to fit the upper portion of the darkstar. I do want to swap the chrome screws that attach the pickup to the plate with black ones, that way they won't stand out so much.

Here it is apart:

This is how it looked previously.

I'm using GHS Precision Flats on these basses... They have a great sound & feel.

I really dig this bass from the Warmoth customer gallery. Love the cream bobbin top. Unfortunately the builder (David Reece, Palm Springs, CA) didn't add any details about the pickup. Novak? Lawrence Born? Hammon? Something else?

This album is all Dark Star pickups in my '67 Starfire. Alembic F2B preamp and Groove Tubes DITTO box. There might be some of it on Youtube, I haven't looked.

I had Thomastiks on there, but I have since moved to Pyramids. I have to say that I don't think the bass was well served in the mix. It's OK sounding but doesn't reflect the true tone I was getting live at the time. I've got the files, so I'm a bit tempted to remix some of it myself (as well as fix a few clams). Right now the Dark Stars are sitting on my bench waiting to be installed in a Gibson EB3, with very early Alembic Series II pickups in the Starfire.
