I have 18mm spacing on my BN6, but I had it custom made that way, and it cost me some $$ too.

It IS possible to convert a BN6 with 19mm spacing to 17mm, but I would not not recommend it at all. :scowl: It would probably play like **** after that for a variety of reasons... mainly because the neck was made for 19mm spacing at the bridge and not 17mm.

The taper (width) of the neck/fretboard is laid out using the string spacing at the nut and bridge. So if you change the spacing at the bridge, there will be an extra 10mm or so of fretboard/neck width @ the 24th fret for no reason. And, there's probably all kinds of other 'geometric wizardry' at work here that could cause problems... problems I could not even begin to foresee...

Now that's a good enough reason why NOT to consider it... IMHO! ;)

I remember reading some time ago some good information on the subject of Macassar Ebony fingerboards... it might have been email conversations with George in fact. if I find them, I'll post that info.

Meanwhile, what I'll add to what they said is that Mac gives a really nice bite to your attack when playing finger style, and a zing to your slap tone that is very appealing for me as well.

My BN6 and AC6 have Mac boards, and I'd definitely order them that way again.

But again, I have no experience with rosewood on a BN5 yet, so I can't speak to that.

Pat's answer was a great one, and definitely not a "pat answer." (Sorry, I couldn't resist).

Recently Carrie Nordstrand was talking about neck taper and thickness with a good friend of mine, and how much they surprisingly impact the TONE of a bass. I would definitely visit with George via email about a custom string spacing, rather than try to retrofit a bass to narrower spacing.

When George was writing me about the custom finger ramp he is doing for my VF5, he told me that in this video, Hadrian Feraud and Dominique DiPiazza are playing a VF5 that George made custom with 17mm string spacing.

He certainly makes them how you want them; you'll have to contact him though to see how much it would cost.

FYI, I injured myself again playing basketball and am typing this with a cast on my left hand.

What is noteworthy about this is, as I visited with the doctor Monday about this injury, I started to understand that there is actually a fair chance that I won't play bass again -- at least like I've been able to play it.

This cast is my second treatment for this same injury. If the cast doesn't work, then there is a surgery that could, but if that fails as well, I'll be left with a tendon in the base of my left thumb that won't ever be strong enough (in this life) to allow me to play bass (or do other things with that hand as well of course).

Or perhaps it will be strong enough for me to play some, provided I change my playing style and stick to 4 string basses.

I'm pretty sure the cast WILL work, so I'm trying not to sweat too much over this, but still, that darker possibility creeps its way into my thoughts from time to time as I wait and try to heal.

At those moments I wonder: do I love this instrument enough to play it in an even more limited manner than I already do? Or will I give it up and pursue another instrument, or perhaps another interest altogether?

Here's hoping I won't have to answer that question. :-/

Well, we are going to have none of that! This procedure will work just fine, and you are going to stop doing silly things that risk what's important to you!

Yeah, I definitely do need to take better care of myself, and stop "doing silly things that risk what's important" to me.

I coach basketball for high school age boys, in large part because I have 2 sons on the team.

When we find ourselves with an odd number in a scrimmage, I step in to even the teams. I try to be careful, even a slacker, so the boys have to be the heroes, but sometimes a zealous incident provides hard contact on even the most careful of participants.

Again, I'm optimistic that I'll play again, but until I know that for sure, I must say this is causing me to appreciate what I've had, much more than I have.

I mean, just a few weeks ago I wrote about my frustrations as a player and how I was tempted to quit.

But now that I'm faced with the possibility of being forced to quit, there's nothing I want less.

Well, okay, there ARE some things I want less, like wars, tyranny, injustice, debilitating diseases and love handles :D...

But suddenly I'm very eager to have my meager place in the bass world again, you know?
