Ugh, guys.. My dad has a way of making me change my mind on anything. I sent him a few emails containing possible basses for me to get, as I am looking for a really good 5 banger, as I need it for Alison Tuesday, as its lots of R&B, blues, funk, etc.
On topic, I sent him a few emails of MTD Z5s, EBMM, a few others.. In return, I get an email of a bunch of pictures of Fbasses, and me playing Tom Bowlus' blue BN5.. He said,
So, Im right back to where I started, having that feeling of buying any other bass than an F will bite me in the butt, as I know that I want an F, but the wait and stress of saving is sooo hard!
Im a strong cat, I saved for everything I own, but $2k or more is more than al of my gear combined!
So, as of now, you guys can consider me back in business.. Again.
I really dont know what to say.. I have been stressing over getting a new bass for about 4 months now, every day researching, and its getting to me.. Its in my head. I need to chill.

I know where you're coming from, Jordan-I've stayed awake nights sometimes worrying about gear. Sometimes, it's too easy to get all wound up about the trivial stuff...
To keep things on-topic, it was in fact thanks to an F-Bass that I got started on this whole fretless 6 kick-if it hadn't sold faster than I could get the money, I probably wouldn't have a Skjold right now.

To be honest, I've never taken two otherwise identical basses and A/B'd them, but I know George has. His personal preference is actually the bent plate for this particular bass, which is why it's standard. It was not a selection to save a few pennies per bass. That said, it is just his pref and as always, YMMV. Clearly, either way, the bass kills, so I'm guessing this is not a huge deal... just something worth giving someone else crap over probably...
i would say the badass would make a bigger difference on the alder/rosewood vf's than the ash. whether the difference is a good one or not is up to your preference. the badass, to my ear, does add some attack and sustain. but, only on lighter less dense instruments. the heavier/denser basses make any difference pretty negligible. the ash vf5's are on the heavier side already ime which wouldnt really yield much of a difference. on an alder/rosewood bass the bent plate bridges sound more open to me. this is something i want on on a bass like that. adding attack is kind of counter intuitive.
if you have a lighter more resonant ash/maple bass than the high mass bridge is a benefit imo. it gets you closer to the sound of a heavier northern ash bass without the extreme weight. putting a badass on the heavier ash bass made no difference to my ear. they hit hard already. mind you, all of this was done swapping bridges on a bunch of different fenders over the years and not on an F.
on F bass topic- i dont like the wood bridge on my bn5f!
He makes a good general point, but IMHO the case in point doesn't apply. IMHO, the basses you emailed him about don't really qualify as doing "something stupid". I think there were some darn good choices in there as "interim" instruments, and if you bought smartly on the used market and kept them in great condition, it wouldn't "cost you" much to own them until you could afford to finally sell them and get the F (or whatever floated your boat at that time).
Yeah, definitely chill, but I think you should also look at things practically and have a plan. If you need a bass, get a bass, buy the best you can afford, buy smartly, and have a plan to get where you eventually want to land. If you don't need a bass right now, then just be patient. Maybe by the time you do actually need one, you'll have the money and life will "automatically" be good.
Anyway, good luck. I know it's hard to want and not have.
I know this is NOT what Vic is saying, I am talking theoretically, not personally...
But I don't believe in buying "starter" or "interim" instruments.
If you know what you want, do what it takes to get it.
Anything else you get just sucks up resources and puts you that much further from what you know you really want.
It's a down economy and a buyer's market. There has never been a better time to buy a used Fbass, so stick to your guns and don't let yourself be blown around like a leaf in the wind. Just keep saving and searching for an Fbass.
The fact that finding a used BN5 for $1,500 is near impossible, if not totally impossible, is just evidence of what a great idea it is to keep saving to get one.
They have a great resale value for a reason.
Again, there is NOTHING wrong with a Fender Jazz bass. If you spent 30 minutes more a day on it, and less time lusting after everything that happens to meet your current savings, just think what kind of a player that will make you when you move in to the new BN5.
And stop thinking you "need" a 5 string bass, much less need one right now. Trust me, 5 string basses are WAY overrated. Too many guys play them for image reasons rather than musical.
And a lot of us play extended range basses, myself included, not so because we need the extended range, but so we can play across the neck rather than up it.
Think about that.
Do Victor Wooten, Jaco Pastorious, Marcus Miller, Tal Wilkenfeld sound limited to you?
Seriously, put this time into YOURSELF and not into finding shortcuts.
Meanwhile, scour the 'net for deals, and SAVE.
